Finished reading 'Escape Velocity' by Gokul Krishna and Raman Garimella.
This book is the first book I have read on cycling, actually it is a handbook on cycling. So, there is no story in this book, only stories are the anecdotal experiences the authors have sprinkled in the book. This book is split into three sections 1) before buying your bike 2) before your first ride 3) becoming a seasoned rider.
This book gives all the information that anyone will require before buying a cycle, maintaining the cycle, changing of gears, diet etc this book also has a six week training programme if you want to take cycling seriously.
This book will help any cyclist who wants to take the cycling to the next level .
This book would have been better if there were more illustrative photographs of handling a puncture, general maintainance of the cycle, different products that are available .
Another feature of this book I liked are the movies and books that are based on cycle/cycling! Nice to see 'Jo Jeeta woh Sikandar' in the list.
Nevertheless it is a good book to have in your collection.
I don't know why but I read the foreword at the end and this shook me. The foreword is by Victor Campenarts, a Belgian pro cyclist who is a record holder of riding 55.089 km in an hour. In the foreword he questions 'How is it possible that such a populous and important nation has so little representation in the elite sport' True!
Things are changing in cycling environment, we will have Indians riding in the pro circuit.

Cycling and Diabetes : Cycling is a good way to keep yourself active because you can choose the pace and intensity of cycling, if you are a diabetic, management of blood sugar is required depending on your intensity of cycling.
There are two types of diabetes Type A or Type 1 and Type B or Type 2. In Type A diabetes enough Insulin is not produced by the body and in Type B insulin produced by the body is not enough, leading to different complications.
Whether you cycle for leisure or as a profession it is advised to keep your doctor involved because s/he can recommend the medication and nutrition required for you.
For a leisure cyclist with Type A diabetes who cycles for 45 to 60 minutes consumption of glucose halfway will help but how much glucose intake is required should be advised by your doctor.
For a more serious cyclist with Type A diabetes who cycle long distances a schedule of food intake should be maintained so that the cyclist understands how the body will react to different intensity of cycling and whether you have to change your insulin intake. It is advisable to carry some insulin during your rides.
If you have Type B diabetes, intake of carbohydrates before the ride is advised, how much carbohydrates to take will be advised by your doctor. I have a friend who has kept a check on his Type B diabetes just by cycling and keping an eye on his diet.
Whatever the diabetes please be in touch with your doctor.
Happy Cycling!
