Despite increased awareness and accessibility, mental health continues to remain a crisis globally.
As a Mindset Coach, I would say that the problem isn't the lack of awareness. It is the inability to take action.
I have noticed that many people have a great deal of self-awareness. They know their triggers. They recognise their patterns. Some even understand the root cause of what they are experiencing.
But, when it comes to taking action and actually doing the work, various factors stop them from seeking help.
1) Societal taboo
We often say that mental health isn't a taboo anymore, but reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Awkward silence, eye rolls or denial: all these are common reactions when someone openly talks about their mental health.
2) Resistance to acceptance
We still treat emotional wellbeing like a luxury, something we can focus on once we have the time, energy or resources.
But emotional wellbeing doesn't wait for us to have a surplus of anything.
3) Lack of inclusivity
Many workplaces still don't have the right support systems to help employees navigate emotional health and wellbeing crises.
Instead, employees feel that important responsibilities or decision-making opportunities are taken away when they are struggling.
And that can make the person feel even more disconnected.
So, perhaps the problem isn't that we don't know enough about mental health.
In fact, we know. We recognise it. We talk about it.
But we still struggle to take that next step, and that is where awareness needs to turn into action.
So, this Mental Health Crisis Awareness Day, let this be a reminder that emotional wellbeing is about taking the right action at the right time.
Let's work through it together, so that one day, we no longer need a day to remind us about mental health crises.
If you are going through a difficult phase in your journey or know someone facing a similar situation, share this post with them so they feel supported.
