Yoga is a gift, yoga is receiving. Its whole purpose is to bring us into alignment with our true nature.

One of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali speaks to perfection in asana. It is reached when the effort to perform the asana becomes effortless. If we focus too much on the effort in the poses, we miss the chance for it to become effortless. We miss the chance to receive what yoga offers for our mental and emotional state.

Moving some of the focus away from the physical side of yoga – the “doing” part – is one way to receive more benefits from yoga. The physical actions are not lessened; the body still becomes stronger and more flexible, but the mind and emotional state are rewarded, too. This may even serve to enhance the physical benefits. All in all, we receive more by doing the same amount, but less aggressively, with less effort.

As a practice, surrender is a way of deeply relaxing your psychic and physical muscles. It is an antidote to the frustration that we experience when we try to control the uncontrollable. However, the state of surrender is always a spontaneous arising, which we can allow by being open to it, but never force.

If accepting and respecting the limits of our bodies is how we practice surrender on the mat, doing our best and then letting go of the result, or gently refusing to live up to some image we have of ourselves are great ways to master surrender off the mat and in our everyday life. The ultimate goal should be the wonderful relief from the feeling that we have to struggle to get through life and a deep sense of being guided and cared for by something greater.

Playfulness requires intention.

Create the intention to be more playful. Sometimes just the awareness will make us think about it and act on it more often.

Playfulness makes us feel happy, light, joyous, energetic, peaceful, and loving. It reduces stress.
