One by One: Match Lost, Concept Gained

Yesterday, I played in our annual open-age badminton tournament with my son as my partner. We faced two young and skillful opponents. As the game intensified, my partner repeatedly said to himself and reminded me, "One by one." Interestingly, the opponents were chanting the same phrase.

As both pairs aimed to reach 21 points, I realized the significance of this mantra. The message was clear: instead of focusing on the ultimate goal of 21 points and getting distracted by the gap between the current score and the target, we should concentrate on winning the next point, and then the next, and so on. This approach embodies the principles of task decomposition, chunking tasks, and breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable ones.

Although we lost the match, I gained a valuable insight: by focusing on incremental progress, we can achieve our larger goals more effectively.
