Positive emotions like hope, happiness, excitement, and joy enable us to engage in higher-order thinking, take risks, look at challenges as opportunities, and put in additional effort, facilitating creativity and innovation. There is enough biological evidence supporting several of these hypotheses.

On the other hand, emotions like fear, anxiety, a sense of threat, and stress shut down our thinking brain and activate our emotional brain in a way that we feel stressed and stretched. We operate from tunnel vision, aiming to survive.

We are not able to take risks or look at opportunities. Every challenge appears as a threat.
This leads to poorer results, unhappiness, and health issues coupled with high stress.

We cannot avoid disruptive emotions like sadness and anger, but we can manage them and live a large part of our lives in a positive state. This is what differentiates successful people.

My own research in organizations shows that people who are more positive attract larger followership.
Please use this principle of putting yourself in a positive frame of mind and having emotions that are energizing rather than destructive to the extent possible

Students learn best when they feel joy, curiosity, and the opportunity to experiment and explore. And therefore, feelings are extremely important for creating the right psychological context within ourselves.

School students cannot do this automatically, but they can learn to do that.

Yesterday, I was privileged to deliver a talk in the Shri G D Kelkar and Dr R A Kulkarni Memorial Lecture Series at V G Vaze College of Arts, Science, and Commerce. The college has served the state and nation for 40 Years and has alumni worldwide.

The topic was Emotional Intelligence and its Utility in Effective Teaching.

The interactions with Members of the Management Committee and Faculty members is indeed memorable. They had brilliant questions which reflected their deep commitment to teaching well.

A primary function of leadership is developing people and creating more leaders. Mentoring skills help leaders effectively enact this function. Some years back, CVC and DPE mandated all CPSEs to mentor newly inducted officers.
Mentoring requires two sets of skills: psychosocial and career development-oriented skills. These are learnable skills. Balmer Lawrie and company management developed several batches of mentors in a progressive stance. I was involved in training the mentors with the requisite skills.

Senior executives with decades of experience could appreciate and learn the concepts with a willingness to have more fulfilling and developmental-oriented relationships with junior executives.
I enjoyed interacting with them as the facilitator and trainer and learned many lessons from them. I wish them all luck in creating an inspiring and engaging climate at Balmer Lawrie.
The efforts of Mr Siddarth Barman, Mr Sourish Chatterjee, Ms Mrigashika Mitra Banerjee, and Mr Ranish Ranjan at Balmer Lawrie deserve special mention.
