Ian Nepomniachtchi won the Candidates 2022 for a second consecutive time with a round to spare! The 31-year-old Russian thus will now challenge Magnus Carlsen for the World Championship Title. Nepo came-back stronger after his collapse in the World Championship match last year and scored a record-breaking 9.5/14.
Gary Kasparov, former World Champion, mentioned that Nepo’s preparation for World Championship played a key-role in his victory.
After a lot of speculations on whether Carlsen will play the next world championship match, the world champion commented in April 2022 that he is unlikely to play with no mention of a potential opponent.

It was interesting to see reaction of the champion as he stated- “I thought he was criminally underrated by the pundits and betting odds but I still thought that Ding and Fabiano were bigger favorites. But kudos, he has done very well." - Carlsen on Nepomniachtchi winning the Candidates 2022

With an undisputed winner who was the strongest player, it remains to see whether Carlsen would agree to face Nepo.
DKCC IIT Bombay wishes the Best of Luck to Ian Nepomniachtchi for the World Championship and his Chess career ahead!
