Yagna is an offering and there are a number of forms of offering. We can perform the physical offering of ghee into fire, destroy our bad habits and desires in the fire of wisdom’s choice and destroy our ego nature in the fire of meditation and devotion. Ultimately the yogi’s life itself is a yagna as he / she offers their whole life to Lord Shiva, by living to know Him, performing everything in service to Him, continually meditating and thinking of Him, and divinely loving Him.

This is the ability to control yourself when you are tempted to indulge in things that you know are not good for you. When you are able to stop yourself from doing things that you shouldn’t do, you are saving yourself from developing bad habits that can have destructive consequences in your life.

Self-restraint doesn’t stop at refraining from being over indulgent. One needs self-restraint to be able to stop themselves from reacting badly towards other people and situations that life throws at them. It only by self-restraint that a person can compose themselves and then choose how they wish to react to the situations that they face in life. We can therefore see that self-restraint is essential for a person to live a successful and harmonious life.

Almsgiving or charity is giving to others who are in need. We can help others by sharing our wealth, time and by supporting others when they need someone to talk to. We must think of others before ourselves and destroy all selfishness in us, thereby developing the divine quality of unselfishness. It is by developing a charitable heart that we can be become closer to realising the Bliss within us.

Being steadfast in your spiritual search is key if you are to be successful. Doing your spiritual practice haphazardly will not bring you the Bliss of your true Self that you are seeking. It is only by being regular in your spiritual practice that you will find it. Make your mind up that you won’t stop until you have found the Bliss within you.

To be fearless you must have unflinching faith in Lord Shiva. In order to have this faith you need to understand and fully accept that the whole of creation is nothing but Lord Shiva, and all that comes to you is being given to you by Him. Have complete faith in Lord Shiva’s wisdom, in that He knows what is best for you and that He won’t give you more difficulties than you can handle. Have faith in His protection of you as you meet the challenges that are waiting for you in life. What is there to fear when the Lord of the universe has you in the palm of His hand?

You must understand that you are in a world where Maya (delusion) is trying to keep you incarnating here. It is Maya’s job to do this. Maya has many tricks and doubt is one of it’s biggest ones. As Lord Shiva does not immediately reveal Himself to you, you must have faith in Him and not let the doubt of Maya pull you down into the delusion of this world. Only Lord Shiva is real, and if you were to experience this truth right now doubt could never touch you again. But the spiritual journey is not that easy. You have been ‘blinded’ to the presence of Lord Shiva so you can develop the quality of faith in Him and fight the many delusions of Maya in order to re-establish Shiva Consciousness.

When you understand how Lord Shiva operates in this world and have complete faith in Him, and understand that Lord Shiva and Gurus are always with you, there will be no fear.

Understand that you are an immortal soul, which is always a part of Lord Shiva, that can never be harmed or killed. Death is only death of the body, not your true self, so there is no need to be afraid of death. Once you start to feel yourself as a soul rather than a body, you will have the feeling of immortality and thus an automatic state of fearlessness. You will feel like a visitor in dream world who has nothing to worry about amidst the drama of life.

When you enter onto the spiritual path, it is fresh and new to you, and so you are eager and full of enthusiasm to progress and experience God within you. In the beginning, Lord Shiva and Gurus give you a spiritual boost where you are able to experience the presence of Lord Shiva more easily. This initial experience is given to you as an incentive for you to search for Lord Shiva deeply. After this, the work comes where you need to discipline yourself to meditate daily and improve yourself by developing spiritual qualities and letting go of unspiritual qualities.

There is a period where seemingly not much is happening to you even though you are putting the above into practice and so you may be inclined to stagnate somewhat. This period however, is a very important time of spiritual growth. A lot of internal changes and purification are happening inside of you which you are not aware of, without which the awareness of the presence of Lord Shiva could not blossom. Liken it to when a seed is planted in the ground; it is necessary it water it every day for quite some time before you see it sprout. During this time when seemingly nothing is happening, the seed has sprouted a network of roots into the ground. Once the roots are established, only then can the sprout come up from the ground and the plant start to become visible, and then grow into a fully formed tree. So it is with Shiva Consciousness; there is a process to go through during which you need to keep practicing with devotion and enthusiasm even though you may not experience a great deal. This period of spiritual work is a period where Lord Shiva sees if you really want Him enough for Him to give Himself to you. The attainment of Shiva Consciousness is the greatest thing in life and is a journey that is taken just once over many lifetimes. Shiva Consciousness is such a sacred thing that it is reserved only for those who will wait for as long as it takes and do whatever is necessary to achieve it.

Spiritual progress can be measured by a number things; how much of the presence of Lord Shiva you can feel during or after meditation, what you can endure on the spiritual path without giving up, loving Lord Shiva and others unconditionally, making knowing Lord Shiva the centre of your life, putting you spiritual practice first above all other things, accepting whatever Lord Shiva gives you in life, how you react to others & life when difficult situations come along, the desire to meditate, and whether you can continue your spiritual practice and develop your relationship with God each day even when you don’t experience any results. When you have stood the test of time with Lord Shiva, showing Him that you will seek Him no matter what, then He will know that you have made some real spiritual progress. When you make choices that are based on spiritual qualities such as honesty or humility, you will be progressing spiritually. When you make choices based on unspiritual qualities, such as greed, pride or selfishness, then this will hold you back from progressing spiritually.

Lord Shiva and Guru will sometimes put you in situations so you have the opportunity to make the right choices and progress spiritually. Always keep a watch on what is coming to you in life and how you react to it. Maya, the opposing force to God in life, will try to trick you to make you think making the wrong, unspiritual choices are the right thing to do, so always be wary of this and choose what ‘feels right’ to you. Lord Shiva may even put you in a very difficult situation, financially for example, to see if you will break and become dishonest in your dealings. If you just stick to your spiritual ideals all will work out ok in the end even if things seem hopeless at the time. Remember life is a testing ground for you to attain Shiva Consciousness and liberation, so make acting in a spiritual way the main concern for you over what you may or may not receive or experience in this world. You have come here for a short time to attain something eternal, so make this of the highest importance to you so can be forever free in Shiva Consciousness at the end of your life.

If you analyse your life, you will see that you are only ever happy when you are fulfilling a certain desire. Once you have fulfilled it, the happiness fades away and then you have to fulfill another desire to be happy again. If you put your happiness on having another person in your life, initially the idea and experience of it will make you happy for some time. However, once that person stops acting in the way that you want them to, that happiness is gone or at the most it is up and down. Your career may bring you happiness in the beginning, but you will find that ultimately it will bring you satisfaction rather than true happiness. Finding happiness from this world requires a constant effort of fulfilling desires, that is why people are always doing one thing or another to feel happy. New clothes, new phone, new activities, new friends, impressing others, accumulating money, food and drink, the list goes on and on.

So, what in this world can give you lasting happiness? The answer is nothing can. You have come to this world to discover this and then ask yourself the question ‘what can give me lasting happiness?’ The answer to this question is that lasting happiness can only be found in Lord Shiva, your higher Self, which is ever-new Joy and Bliss. Lord Shiva is beyond the illusion of time and space of this world and so was not created and thus cannot end. Lord Shiva (God) is therefore the only true Constant that can be known in your life. Fortunately, Lord Shiva is the very thing (happiness) that you are continually seeking, so get to know Him and you will always be happy and peaceful. Always keep this in your mind and you will be motivated to make the effort to know Lord Shiva. Once you have found the Bliss of Lord Shiva through your sadhana, no one can take that the awareness of Him away from you. All else that is accumulated in this world has to be left behind once you leave here, except your awareness of Lord Shiva within you. The wise therefore seek God above all other things.

All human beings make mistakes. We were not born with the innate knowledge of how to do everything in the world, so a lot of life is trial and error, for both the big and small things in life, such as parenting, work and navigating the spiritual path. Making mistakes are a natural part of life that you should not feel bad about as everyone makes them. The thing to focus on when you make a mistake is to resolve the situation as best you can, and learn from it, so you don’t make the same mistake again. The thing not to focus on when you make a mistake is feeling negative about yourself. Never be hard on yourself for your mistakes, even if others are hard towards you. Be kind to yourself and move past the mistake that you have made without self-judgement or self-criticism. Even if you make the greatest mistake, it is important that you do not become negative towards yourself as it will make it harder for you to rectify what you have done and move past it. You must stay confident, strong and happy no matter what mistakes that you make in life.

If you a persecuted by others for the mistakes that you have made, once you have done everything that you can to rectify the situation, ignore the people who are still persecuting you and instead, always remember that Lord Shiva and Gurus love and accept you no matter what mistakes you have made. When you have made a mistake, Lord Shiva and Gurus want you to pick yourself up straight away, rectify it and learn from it, and then put it out of your mind and carry on with life happily.

It is the same God that exists in the Hindu temples, Sikh gurudwaras, Christian churches and the many other spiritual places in the world. Venerate Him with love and devotion in each of His many temples and churches. Although you will find that God’s appearance is different in the various temples and churches, it is the same God that is behind all of them.
