Pāśāsana (पाशासन), the Noose Pose, is the opening posture of the Nāḍī Śodhana (Intermediate Series) of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga. The Sanskrit word pāśa means “noose” or “bond,” symbolizing the binding nature of ignorance (avidyā), attachment (rāga), and the limitations of the mind.
Through a deep squat, spinal twist, and bind, Pāśāsana cultivates stability, mobility, and mindful awareness. Traditionally, it is understood to purify the spine and nervous system while encouraging the practitioner to unite breath (prāṇa), bandha, and dṛṣṭi into one steady practice.
More than a physical posture, Pāśāsana invites the practitioner to release inner limitations and approach practice with patience, humility, and unwavering discipline (abhyāsa).
