年1月10日、台湾の教育制度は長年にわたり中国語(北京語)中心で運営されてきたため、台湾語を話す人は年々減少しています。初の公立「台湾語実験小学校が設立されたことで、外部からも注目が集まっています。これは衰退しつつある地域言語に再生のきっかけをもたらすのでしょうか。高雄出身の37歳、黄子維さんは台湾語を話す家庭環境で育ちました。現在は父親となり、自分の娘のために積極的に台湾語の環境を作っています。彼は家族の年長者にも子どもたちに台湾語で話すよう求めています。「子どもが生まれる前から、子どもたちには台湾語で話そうと決めていました。当時の考えはとてもシンプルでした。自分が言うことは必ず実行し、子どもにより多くを学ばせたいと思ったのです。現在、娘さんは6歳で、流暢に台湾語を話すことができます。日常生活の中で市場やレストランでも大人と台湾語で会話ができます。しかし、本当 の課題は学校にあります。台湾の教育制度は中国語が中心であり、平均的な子どもは放課後に台湾語を話さなくなってしまいます。ちょうど娘の興菲(シンフェイ)さんが小学校に入学する準備をしていた頃、高雄で初めての「台湾語実験小学校である美陵国民小学が誕生しました。この学校では初めて、台湾語を主な授業言語とし、中国語を補助言語として教育が行われます。この学校は従来の学校から転換されたもので、黄子維さん一家が住む橋頭地区からは近くありません。 それでも夫婦で話し合った結果、毎日30分以上かけて往復し、娘を蘆竹区の学校まで送り迎えすることを決めました。そして娘さんはその第一期生となりました。
