Many of us enjoy the comfort of a hug or a pat on the back, but this simple act can cause extreme anxiety or panic for someone with past trauma . Physical touch may make them feel trapped or overwhelmed or remind them of past trauma. Especially with someone who has experienced sexual abuse, hugs and physical touch can be very difficult for them to comprehend as warmth. Because the basic nature of a trauma survivor is that of guilt and fear which makes them over givers in any relationship. They sometimes give to the level of burnout and exhaustion because they feel they hold the responsibility of keeping the relationship or a partnership going. Only when they heal they are able to see the lack of efforts and lack of interest on the other side.
