INTRODUCING ONE OF RALEIGH'S HARDEST WORKERS – BERT PRONK...
Bert Pronk was in T.I. Raleigh's small gang of bespectacled riders that, when on-form, could display flashes of brilliance that would leave many of the worlds top riders trailing in his wake! Added to which Bert was one of the teams longest serving riders. That alone, in the cut throat world of professional bike racing speaks volumes about his pedigree.
Born on 24th August 1950, the Dutchman from Scheveningen was one of the very first riders to be contracted to ride for Peter Posts fledgling T.I. Raleigh team back in 1974. Here he stayed, as an integral and valued team rider for a total of 7 years, until the end of the 1981 racing season. With a brief holiday in 1978, when he moved to the Belgian Ijsboerke team alongside the other Raleigh rider Did Thurau. A year later he came back home to ride on the famous red bikes from Nottingham!
During his substantial professional career, Bert's stand-out year was 1977 when he took overall victory's in two stage races. The Tour of the Netherlands and The Tour of Luxembourg. In addition to finishing in third place overall in a mountainous Tour of Switzerland.
Just like every other professional in the T.I. Raleigh team, Bert was a rider that had an array of talents. Sometimes as a loyal team helper, but equally at home going for a victory. This is evident in Bert's results, winning stages of The Etoile Espoirs, The 4 Days Of Dunkerque and a host of other races too! Combing through his results, Bert was always consistent during every single season he raced.
His various team directors must have thought highly of Bert simply for his longevity as rider, along the way, competing in the Tour De France four times. The Giro twice and also The Vuelta once.
Bert retired from cycling at the end of the 1982 season and sadly passed away at a relatively young age in 2005.
