Ranji Trophy cricketer Fazil Rashid shares his experience of playing local cricket in Kashmir
“Over the last 3 months, I have been part of local cricket in Kashmir. After participating in multiple teams and tournaments, I feel it’s important to speak honestly and professionally about the realities players face.
Among all the teams I played for, Real Sultan Summerbugh stands out as the only team that showed professionalism. Payments were made on time, communication was clear, and the team owner was humble and respectful towards players. My experience with them was genuinely positive and professional.
With some teams, the management, communication, and payment structure were consistently poor. Payments were delayed, commitments were not honoured, and players were left chasing basic dues.
In one of the leagues, while playing for a team, players were paid only match fees. Once the tournament ended, the owner stopped responding-calls unanswered, messages ignored, with only a single assurance that the amount would be transferred. It never was.
This is not professionalism. This is exploitation. Local cricket in Kashmir is slowly turning into a system where players are used, not respected. Many team owners call players without offering advance payments. Written clarity, or accountability. They talk big but fail at the basics. If professionalism has a “P,” most of these setups don’t even understand it.
There was a time-during matches at Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium when club cricket was competitive, disciplined, and meaningful. Players trained daily, prepared seriously, and club cricket actually helped players grow toward higher levels.
Today, that structure has collapsed. My clear message to young players: If your goal is only short-term money, local cricket may give you that-sometimes.
But if your goal is to become a serious cricketer, to represent your state or country, this system will not take you there. Invest in proper academies. Invest in structured environments.
Play tough, long-format games. Build temperament, discipline, and resilience. That grind is what makes a cricketer-not these unaccountable local leagues.”
