أحد الأسباب التي تجعل العالم يحترم النظام في المملكة المتحدة هو طريقة التعامل مع رواتب المسؤولين الحكوميين. في المملكة المتحدة، يتقاضى عضو البرلمان حوالي 86,000 جنيه إسترليني سنويًا، بينما يتقاضى رئيس الوزراء حوالي 165,000 جنيه إسترليني. أما الطبيب الحكومي ذو الخبرة العالية فيصل راتبه إلى حوالي 126,000 جنيه إسترليني. الفرق بين هذه المناصب موجود، لكنه يبقى ضمن نطاق معقول. والأهم من ذلك أن هذه الرواتب شفافة ويتم تحديدها من قبل جهة مستقلة، وليس بقرار حر من السياسيين أنفسهم. الآن قارن ذلك بدول يتقاضى فيها كبار السياسيين عشرات الملايين شهريًا، بينما يحصل الأطباء ذوو الكفاءة العالية على جزء بسيط فقط من هذا المبلغ. هذا يخلق فجوة يصعب تبريرها، خاصة وأن الأطباء يكرسون سنوات طويلة من التعليم ويتحملون مسؤوليات إنقاذ حياة الناس. القضية ليست في جعل الجميع متساوين، بل في جعل الرواتب عادلة، معقولة، وخاضعة للمساءلة. النظام الذي يقدّر الكفاءة يجب ألا يُقلل من قيمة المتخصصين فيه، ولا يُبالغ في مكافأة السياسيين.
