Strýtan Divecenter

We offer you dives and dive tours around Iceland along with a little bit of sightseeing and whale wat There we have our dive center in an old herring factory.

Strytan Divecenter is located in a small fishing village called Hjalteyri, near Akureyri in Iceland. The dive center is on two floors and the second floor is a little museum about the hydro-thermal chimneys in Eyjafjörður and it also shows some spectacular things that have been found all around Iceland. We also have a hot tub were you can warm up after dives or just relax and enjoy the view over t

he fjord, where you might even see some whales swimming around. Our PADI instructor and commercial diver is Erlendur Bogason, the first person to dive down to the chimneys . He has been working underwater since 1992 and has a lot of experience in the field of diving and photographing underwater. He is also educated as a special search and recovery diver. We offer single dives and tours to few amazing places in the north of Iceland:

Strýtan in Eyjafjörður is a hydro-thermal chimney that rises 70 meters from the ocean floor to 15 meters to the surface. This cone is truly unique and only one known of its kind that you can scuba dive down to. You can call it one of the wonders of the world. It takes around 10 min to sail to Strýtan and on the way you can see some whales. Arnarnesstrýtan in Eyjafjörður is a lot smaller than Strýtan. It rises 12 meters high from 25 meters. At Arnarnesstrýtur you can feed cod and our wild pet wolfish Stefanie. It takes around 5 min to sail to the Arnarnesstrýtan and you could see some whales on the way. The Northern Water Circle is a day tour to a crack called Nesgjá and to a unique river called Littla Á in the north-east of Iceland. Along with the diving tour we go to Mývatn to complete the water circle. Mývatn is known for its bird life and beauty. You can expect to be up to 12 hours in this tour with a beautiful view along the way. Diving in Drangey is only possible for a short time, around Mai to August, if you want to dive with the guillemot birds but you don't only dive with the birds, you can also take a tour around the island and when you get to shore again you can take a bath in Grettislaug. Diving with the guillemot birds is an experience that you won't easily forget and after. This tour could be up to 10 hours. The wreck Standard lies in the harbor of Akureyri. Standard is a wooden ship that is 60 meters long and 11 meters wide and is surrounded by a beautiful marine life. On the first picture you can see a male Atlantic Wolffish guarding his eggs. They were spawned on the 31.08.2022 and the picture eas taken on the 12.09.2022 so these eggs were 12 days old.
You can notice that these eggs are a large white ball and the Wolffish has wrapped himself around them.

On the next picture you can see the same Wolffish except the picture is taken on the 02.04.2023 or 7 months later.
If you take a close look you can see the eggs are now dark due to the development of the larvae. It‘s even possible to see the eyes.
These eggs hatched two days later.

Before, we thought the Wolffish didn't eat during the time he was guarding the eggs. Now we know that the Wolffish doesn't eat for the whole mating season either, that can be a couple of weeks or even a bit longer.
So the male Wolffish doesn't eat from pairing until the eggs have hatched so for about 8 months!
