As someone originally from Bari, you already know the profound emotional weight these two specific jerseys carry. I am sure that even while hustling in London, seeing these takes you straight back to the roaring stands of the Stadio San Nicola.
These shirts—the Lotto design with the classic TELE+ sponsor—belong to the 1999-2000 A.S. Bari season. But more specifically, the combination of Cassano ( #18) and Enyinnaya ( #26) tells the story of a single, legendary night that is permanently etched into the history of Italian football.
Here is the true story of those jerseys, that night, and the magical era of A.S. Bari.
The Setup: The Golden Era of Fascetti’s Bari
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Serie A was arguably the greatest and most difficult football league in the world, packed with superstars and massive budgets. A.S. Bari, managed by the brilliant and pragmatic Eugenio Fascetti, was a team of giant-killers.
Fascetti’s Bari didn't have the budget of Juventus, AC Milan, or Inter, but they played fearless, exciting football. The team featured incredible talents and cult heroes during this era, including the late, great South African striker Phil Masinga, the Swedish maestro Daniel Andersson, Yksel Osmanovski, and a young midfielder named Simone Perrotta (who would later win the World Cup).
The Night of Miracles: December 18, 1999
The story of these two specific jerseys culminates on a cold Saturday night in December 1999. Marcello Lippi’s Inter Milan came to the Stadio San Nicola. Inter was a team of galacticos, featuring legends like Christian Vieri, Roberto Baggio, Laurent Blanc, Javier Zanetti, and Christian Panucci.
Bari was facing an injury crisis up front. Fascetti made a massive gamble. He decided to start two teenagers who had barely any Serie A experience:
* Hugo Enyinnaya (The #26 Red Jersey): An 18-year-old Nigerian prospect.
* Antonio Cassano (The #18 White Jersey): A 17-year-old local boy from the streets of Bari Vecchia.
What happened next became Italian football folklore.
The Strike: Enyinnaya ( #26)
Just seven minutes into the match, Hugo Enyinnaya received the ball about 40 meters from the goal. Without hesitation, he unleashed an absolute thunderbolt of a shot. It flew like a rocket past the legendary Inter goalkeeper, Angelo Peruzzi, crashing into the net off the underside of the crossbar. The San Nicola erupted. It remains one of the greatest goals ever scored in the stadium's history.
Inter Milan eventually equalized in the second half through Christian Vieri, but the magic wasn't over.
The Birth of the Jewel: Cassano ( #18)
In the 88th minute, with the game tied 1-1, Simone Perrotta launched a long, hopeful ball up the left wing.
Seventeen-year-old Antonio Cassano was chasing it down. What he did next introduced his genius to the world. Running at full speed, Cassano famously controlled the 40-yard pass perfectly with his heel—a touch of pure street-football magic. He then cut inside, slaloming past two legendary defenders (Laurent Blanc and Christian Panucci), and calmly slotted the ball past Peruzzi into the near corner.
Bari won 2-1. Cassano pulled his shirt over his head, running wildly toward the track, crying tears of joy. Overnight, he went from a local kid playing in the alleys of the old city to Il Gioiello di Bari Vecchia (The Jewel of Old Bari) and the most sought-after teenager in world football.
The Legacy of the Shirts
These two jerseys represent the fleeting, beautiful magic of football.
* Enyinnaya struggled with injuries and the pressures of professional football after that night. He never quite reached the heights predicted for him, making that 40-yard screamer a bittersweet, solitary moment of pure glory.
* Cassano, of course, went on to become one of the most talented (and controversial) Italian players of his generation, playing for AS Roma, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Inter, but it all started in that white #18 Lotto shirt.
Putting these two shirts together in a luxury showcase isn't just displaying sportswear; it is preserving the memory of the night two teenagers took down the giants of Serie A and made the whole city of Bari dream. Forza Bari!
