The trimmers

In May, Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei won the Nacra 17 World Championship in Quiberon. Four months later they trimmed the AC40 that topped the fleet racing by 15 points and beat Emirates Team New Zealand by 17 seconds in the final. Freddie Carr, who spends his races watching the traveller, said Giubilei looked like one of the best sail trimmers in the fleet.

The top three

Luna Rossa, Emirates Team New Zealand and La Roche-Posay all built their crews from the same two classes. Ten of the twelve sailors on those boats came through the 49er or the Nacra 17. The 49er supplied the helms in Burling, Outteridge and Botín. The Nacra 17 supplied most of the trimmers.

The women

The Nacra 17 has carried a woman in every crew since 2016. Ten years on, Giubilei trimmed the winning senior boat on a crew with no gender quota, Erica Dawson won the Women & Youth division and Margherita Porro skippered Luna Rossa 2.

Gold on home water 🇯🇵🥇

Misaki Tanaka and Sera Nagamatsu are your Asian Games 49erFX champions! Racing in front of a home crowd in Gamagori, they won five of nine races and finished four points clear of the fleet. Two years ago in Hangzhou they took silver. This time nobody could touch them.

Hong Kong’s Emily Grace Polson and Tiffany Mak Hiu Tung pushed them hard all week and take home silver 🥈

India’s Harsh*ta Tomar and Sh*tal Verma sailed a consistent series to grab bronze 🥉

China’s Hu Xiaoyu and Sun Yuyue rounded out the fleet after a tough week on the water 🇨🇳

What a week of racing at Kaiyoh Yacht Harbor 👏

That’s a wrap on the 49er at the Asian Games 🇯🇵

Racing kicked off on 26 September at Kaiyoh Yacht Harbor in Gamagori, Aichi, and after nine races the medals are decided.

🥇 🇨🇳 | Wen Zaiding and Liu Tian
🥈 🇮🇳 | Kurisinkal Noble Prince and Manu Francis
🥉 🇭🇰 | Akira Luke Sakai and Russell Williams Aylsworth

Wen and Liu defend the title they won in Hangzhou, finishing on 16 points with four race wins. India and Hong Kong ended level on 23, with India taking silver on the tiebreak. Sakai and Aylsworth make it back to back bronze medals at the Games.

Look at Luna Rossa’s boat and Emirates Team New Zealand’s boat. Look at who’s steering them, trimming them, calling the wind. Look at where they came from. Both of the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup favorites are essentially built from the same source: the 49er and Nacra 17 classes. That’s not a recruiting coincidence. That’s a competitive advantage made visible.

Olympian Odile Lambriex van Aanholt talks to Andy Rice about maximising time on and off water

Time is always the most precious commodity for any racing sailor, whether part-time or professional. For Odile Lambriex van Aanholt going for another Olympics, life should get more simple the second time around.

Having won Olympic gold at Paris 2024 with her experienced crew Annette Duetz, she knows how to run a successful campaign, yet she is more time crunched than ever before – partly because she gave birth to her daughter in mid-2025, and also because Duetz retired from competition after the Games.
