When a mare experiences high cortisol (stress) levels due to poor herd management, overcrowding, or lack of free movement, those stress hormones can be passed to the foal through her milk and general behavior. This alters the foal's hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, creating an adult horse with a lower threshold for panic and a higher sensitivity to everyday stressors.
