Why walk in Italy? Italy is probably the most varied of all European countries, partly because of its geography – stretching from the Alps to Northern Africa -, partly because of its central role in history.
Here you can find it all, Greek ruins, Roman history, Renaissance art, the best of Baroque, and medieval fortresses and abbeys. But also a variety of landscapes, cities, food, fashion, music, wine and gelati. The Italian cuisine – don’t tell the French – is probably the best available and incredibly varied – not only pasta! If you go to the right places, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the real Italian life. Italians, generally perceived to be a sophisticated, good living and good natured people, are generally friendly, exuberant and humorous, and away from the beaten tourist tracks, very welcoming. For us, at Genius Loci Travel, it is important that our clients will be able to perceive the ‘Real Spirit of Italy’ on our tours. We not just take you to places, or worse ‘do’ places, but select the most special places of this wonderful country – both known and unknown ! – and try to make you understand the places you visit and take in the best parts of it. We make you feel the special atmosphere and unique qualities of each place we take you to. We make you experience the places you travel to with us, live them and return home richer. Genius Loci Travel is a fully-licensed, independent Italian Tour Operator. The leading specialist for active holidays all over Italy. It's not always sunny along the Amalfi Coast. But there is no such a thing as bad weather to go out hiking. The views are always stunning! #GeniusItaly
Since thousands of years 'all roads lead to Rome. And perhaps today the most famous of these roads is the so-called ‘Via Francigena’, the longest 'Cammino' in Italy, which leads from northern Europe to Rome, and from there on to the 'Holy Land'.
The full route, starting from Canterbury and entering Italy at the Great St. Bernard Pass, has been described in detail by Sigeric, archbishop of Canterbury, in 990. It is ‘his’ route which is now considered as the ‘official’ Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome. This map gives all the stages.
And of course there is much more than only the 'official' Via Francigena! More info: https://www.genius-loci.it/tour/pilgrim-routes-francigena-francis-camino-rome #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly

Walking through the 'Tuscan landscape' - on the Amalfi Coast
These days it's all about safety first! Luckily Italy is still one of the safest countries to travel to.
And to enjoy your holiday in absolute safety a self-guided hiking tour is the ultimate solution!

A volte le soluzioni sono facili... un 'Trekking in Libertà' !
The good thing about southern Italy: even when the weather is 'bad', there is so much beauty to walk through....
And the next day the sun comes aout again andf after the hike you can go swimming!
Today it has rained a bit - which hopefully means the end of the 'fire season' and the beginning of what arguably is the best season to hike the trails of the Amalfi Coast.
Unfortunately recent wild fires have done some damage, also along the 'Path of the Gods' so check carefully the latest info before starting your walk:
www.genius-loci.it/tour/hiking-walking-tips-footpaths-of-the-amalfi-coast #VisitAmalfi #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly
Some bad news: unfortunately the Amalfi Coast is a very fragile area and prone to landslides, especially after the wild fires which occur almost every Summer.
This time wildfires have affected the famous ‘Sentiero degli Dei’, while another fire has developed along the upper ‘Valle delle Ferriere Nature Reserve’ between Scala and Amalfi.
We therefore recommend NOT to go hiking in these areas without guidance (although feasible – the beauty in some areas is gone for a while – until Nature fights back).
Of course we are, continuously monitoring the situation, not only to keep our (few…) clients ‘out of danger’, but also to give them valid alternatives in case one of the walks of our walking tours is affected. An interesting read about hiking in Europe. And... although not mentioned, also Italy has a number of beautiful long-distance trails! #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly
As Europeans are rediscovering their local natural surroundings, confined to their immediate area due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, hiking and bikepacking have become prime holiday past-times this year.
But how did the sport of walking for the sake of walking come to be? This blog explores the history of hiking in Europe, from Wandervögel to Grande Randonnée
As Europeans are rediscovering their local natural surroundings, confined to their immediate area due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, hiking and backpacking have become prime holiday past-times this year.
The Val d'Orcia should definitely be on your bucket list: stunning landscapes and beautiful villages - linked by a network of beautiful paths: www.genius-loci.it/tour/divine_countryside/tuscany-hiking-valdorcia - hiking at its best! #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly
If you like hiking, but always go 'off.the-beaten-track', because you hate the crowds: this might be your chance to see some of the rightly (!) famous trails of the Amalfi Coast!
Which over the last years have become (too) crowded, but now (thanks to Covid....) are feasible again!
Being a tour operator, it seems strange to write this, but it's the undeniable truth that these days - without the usual crowds - the Amalfi Coast is simply stunning!
True, the Summer is usually not the best walking season, but on this tour you'll walk in the shade of lush gardens, pass under the waterfalls and you'll be always close to the sea and a fresh lemonade!

And hiking between these villages is even better! #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly

So, on a relaxed walking day, after 70% of the hike, it's good to sit down and have some Italian carbs - plus some wine- sitting under the lemon trees. And then make the leisurely walk back down to Amalfi. #HikingItaly

Italians have regained their 'freedom'. All outdoor enthousiasts are posting their (single - or distanced!) hikes of this weekend on FB.
And very soon also you will be allowed to come over again. See you soon Hiking in Italy again! A presto! #HikingItaly
A bit of beauty in these strange times. Which we hope to be able to show you soon. Live!
To our friends from across the globe,
This looks to be a summer unlike any before, there is no denying it. Many of you have had to cancel your dream vacations, already planned and booked. Others have put summer holiday planning on hold as the situation worldwide remains uncertain.
Here in Italy, we are slowly beginning to return to normal life as the spread of the pandemic within our borders slows. It is not the life we had before, but one that reflects the new reality we are all facing, with new habits and ways of interacting. We wear masks and keep a safe distance, but we are finally able to see our relatives again, take walks outside, and watch the sunset over the sea as our children run and ride bikes along the promenade.
The first time we were able to go out, we were struck anew with the beauty of our land! The sea has never been this cystalline, the air this clear and infused with the scent of spring. Of course, the sight of the usually bustling Piazzetta in Capri empty of visitors and cafè tables on a gorgeous May day was a shock, as were the quiet streets of Sorrento with their shops shuttered, and the steep lanes in Positano deserted. But after two months of eating at home, nothing was more delicious that an authentic wood-fired pizza picked up from our favorite local pizzeria...even if we did have to savor it at our own kitchen table.
Cafès and restaurants are still closed; the Italian government anticipates reopening these businesses 1 June, the same month that many hotels anticipate opening for the season. Ferries, trains, and buses are running with a fewer number if passengers and sanitizing the interiors after each route. The most important unknown at this point are flights, as many airlines have not yet announced when they will begin scheduling regular flights again.
In the meantime, we send you our very best wishes along with a bit of our bright sunshine and blue skies, in the hopes of seeing you again soon.
If you love mountain walks, June is the month to come. Flowers, fresh air & space. All that we are looking forward to!
Walking, hiking or trekking? The Cilento National Park is the perfect destination!
The Cilento is a stunningly beautiful area with some of the best hikes & walks in Italy! The area is among our personal favourites – not often mentioned in any of the guide books (yet), and therefore without the crowds you’ll find in more famous destinations!
Space, silence and security - all that you are looking for these days!
Although the Cilento offers endless possibilities for hiking, unfortunately there are still no good maps available. We therefore recommend to book a Cilento tour at a trustworthy tour operator, who will supply you with up-to-date information about the walks as well as good maps!
Check out all the possibilities: www.genius-loci.it/tour/walking-hiking-trekking-cilento-nationalpark #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly #VisitCilento
As stated by Tim Jepson (The Telegraph):
Plenty of countries have mountains, but only Italy has the Dolomites, Europe’s most dramatic upland region!
You could make claims for the Pyrenees but they lack the distinctive spires and rock pinnacles of the Dolomites’ many and jumbled massifs.
And there is not just one range of Dolomites: there are several distinc ranges, all with their own character.
Check them all out in one stunning self-guided, individual hiking tour: https://www.genius-loci.it/tour/alpine_scenery/dolomites #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly
The island of Capri is undoubtedly the most famous of the three islands in the Bay of Naples. And it certainly lives up to its fame!
Unlike the other two islands, Capri is made of chalkstone, just like its natural continuation, the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. This explains its rather unique features, such as the world-famous ‘Faraglioni’, its natural bridge and its impressive cliffs. All that combined makes up for some great hiking! But it’s definitely not only the stunning nature which made the island famous! If you wish you can also visit its amazing Roman villas, stunning monasteries and indulge in its fashionable ‘dolce vita’ too.
A few days here will be some of your most memorable: www.genius-loci.it/tour/italy_coasts_islands/capri-walking-hiking-tour #HikingItaly #GeniusItaly
There is a 'Grand Canyon' also in southern Italy. With the difference that there is a beautiful medieval village at its entrance! #GeniusItaly #HikingItaly #Calabria
(And yes, the canyon itself is a bit swmaller - but the village of Civita and the beautiful food make up for that!)
Today, Easter Monday, is traditionally the day that literally ALL Italians go for a hike. Or better, a stroll (carrying an abundance of foodstuffs, you can't get that far.....).
In normal years.... This year we just rest our feet and look back on and forward to Better Times! Happy Easter ! #HikingItaly
Per ora riposiamo i nostri piedi. Poi ci rifaremo alla grande! Buona Pasqua. E buoni passi per il resto dell'anno!
It might seem a strange thing to say, but...even in these 'dark' times there is some light for us hikers!
For those who have always wanted to go hiking the stunning Cinque Terre, but hate to walk with thousands of others...
This might be your chance to go and enjoy the stunning beauty of this area!
Book a tour for later this year, before the crowds will be back. Because they will be back! This area is simply too beautiful not to visit! #HikingItaly
As an outfitter of walking tours we are obviously rather unhappy (understatement..) with the whole situation.
But, being hikers ourselves, we see one positive point: there will certainly be no #overtourism this year in certain areas, and we will be able to go #hiking the trails of the Cinque Terre again without the crowds. Enjoying their absolutely beauty again! - the beauty that had gone lost a bit over the last decade....
If you want to enjoy that unreal beauty as well, please check out our 'tips': www.genius-loci.it/tour/cinque-terre-footpaths-hiking-trails - with the actual 'Corona-crisis' this might be your chance to hike the trails without the crowds!
