🇬🇧 WRC 2028: ROME AND SARDINIA IN ONE RALLY?
Rally Italia could return to Sardinia in 2028, but in a completely different format. Following the confirmation of the 2027 calendar, which will see Rome replace Sardinia, ACI has revealed plans to bring both locations together in a single WRC event.
The idea would be to combine Lazio’s asphalt roads with Sardinia’s gravel stages. However, moving cars, teams and equipment between mainland Italy and the island would present major logistical challenges. No details about the route or event structure have been announced.
Meanwhile, Sardinia remains committed to international rallying. The Region has confirmed financial support reaching €3.5 million, with funding planned until 2030, reflecting its intention to preserve an event that has brought sporting and tourism benefits to the island for over two decades.
For now, the joint Rome–Sardinia rally remains a proposal, with no confirmed route or official approval for 2028.

🇬🇧 WRC 2027: OFFICIAL CALENDAR, 15 RALLIES
The FIA has officially announced the 2027 WRC calendar, approved by the World Motor Sport Council. The championship will feature 15 rallies across five continents, marking an important step in its international expansion.

The main changes are the return of the United States, the comeback of the United Kingdom with Rally Scotland, and Rally Italia’s move from Sardinia to Rome.
Rally USA will bring the WRC back to the United States for the first time since 1988. Scotland will host the championship with Aberdeen as its base, while Rome will make its WRC debut on asphalt.

There were also last-minute negotiations. Chile secured its 2027 extension in the final stages of calendar discussions, while Safari Rally Kenya, which had been at risk of losing its place, ultimately remained on the schedule.

The most notable absence is Portugal, despite a previously announced agreement running until 2028.
According to Area Corse, its exclusion followed a disagreement over the event’s format. In particular, Friday’s itinerary was reportedly considered too spread out by teams and drivers. Portuguese organisers are said to have maintained their position, preventing an agreement with the Promoter.
This remains an unconfirmed report, but it raises questions about calendar management and relations between organisers and the Promoter.
Portugal is reportedly already discussing a possible return in 2028.

The WRC has therefore achieved its goal of a calendar spanning five continents, expanding its international presence. However, this geographical growth also comes with difficult decisions, including the exclusion of one of the championship’s most historic and popular events.

🇮🇹 WRC 2027: CALENDARIO UFFICIALE, 15 RALLY E PORTOGALLO ESCLUSO

🇬🇧 WRC27: MORE POWER TO CREATE A GAP TO RALLY2
The FIA is preparing a technical change for 2027: cars competing in the new Rally1 category will be allowed to use a 33 mm turbo restrictor, compared with 32 mm for standard Rally2 cars.

The change will apply to both the new WRC27 cars and Rally2-WRC Kit cars, which will be eligible for the top category from next season.

One millimetre may sound insignificant, but it should provide around 3% more airflow, with an estimated power increase of approximately 12-15 hp. Rally1 cars should therefore exceed 300 hp, while standard Rally2 cars will remain around 290 hp.

The objective is to create a clearer performance gap. With the same 32 mm restrictor, the FIA is concerned that WRC27, Rally2-WRC Kit and standard Rally2 cars could be too closely matched, particularly in certain conditions and with favourable road positions.

There is also an economic consideration. If Rally2 cars can get too close to Rally1 performance, the incentive to invest in the new top category could be reduced, while an increasing development race in Rally2 could progressively push costs higher.

The proposed solution is therefore relatively simple: use the restrictor to give Rally1 more power without requiring major technical changes.
The change is not yet final and must still be approved by the World Motor Sport Council on 15 October.

🇬🇧 DID YOU KNOW?
Elfyn Evans claimed his first world title in Sardinia, where he had made his World Rally Car debut 13 years earlier.

It was 2013. Qatar-backed M-Sport was preparing four Ford Fiesta RS WRCs for madsostberg – Jonas Andersson , Novikov– Ilka Minor , Thierry Neuville – Nicolas Gilsoul and Nasser S Al Attiyah – Bernacchini Giovanni . Days before the rally, Nasser withdrew due to business commitments and Malcolm Wilson called up Evans, the 2012 WRC Academy champion.

The Welshman stepped into the Fiesta WRC alongside Al-Attiyah’s co-driver, Giovanni Bernacchini: with the entry already submitted, the regulations allowed only one crew member to be changed.

The goal was to learn and reach the finish. Evans went further: he finished sixth, just 0.9 seconds ahead of Kościuszko–Szczepaniak crew.

Ahead were names that would remain intertwined with his career: Ogier won for Volkswagen, with Sébastien now his Toyota team-mate; Neuville finished second; Latvala third, with Jari-Matti now his team principal in Toyota. Sordo was fourth for Citroën, and Martin Prokop fifth in Jipocar’s Ford.

Evans continued his 2013 WRC2 campaign, switching to the new Fiesta R5 before stepping up to the top class full-time in 2014. He remained within the M-Sport fold until 2019, joining Toyota in 2020.

He came close to the title in his first year, but sliding off a snowy road at Rally Monza handed the championship to Ogier. Four more runner-up finishes followed: 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Five times second, yet he never stopped chasing his dream.

In 2026, the story came full circle: at Sardinia’s final WRC event, Evans became world champion with Toyota alongside Scott Martin . From 2013 to 2018, apart from that Sardinian outing with Bernacchini, Evans competed with Daniel Barritt. Since 2019, Scott “Scotty” Martin has been by his side.

Italy again, but this time on the other side of the story: in 2020, his own mistake cost him the title; in 2026, Solberg’s error on the Power Stage opened the door to the crown.
From debut to world title, 13 years later. 👑

🇬🇧 Today marked the end of a decade of extraordinary speed, from the WRC+ cars to Rally1. Ten years that gave us spectacular machines, a joy to watch on every surface and in every condition.

An unforgettable era deserved an unforgettable finale, and today delivered exactly that.

Ogier, Tänak, Neuville, Rovanperä and now Evans: each has claimed at least one world title during this decade. Different careers, united by the mark they have left on rallying.

A special mention goes to Solberg and Pajari. Their disappointment today is understandable, but both have shown they have what it takes to fight for the title again. Their future holds enormous promise.

Ogier, Tänak, Evans and Neuville have given us years of great battles. Whenever they choose to stop, their achievements and the memories they have created will remain part of rally history.

Rovanperä, still so young, has a different road ahead. We hope to see him back in the World Rally Championship for many years to come.

Long live rallying ❤️
