Being authentic involves more than making decisions that suit us. It includes how we speak, our sense of humour, our interests, our opinions, and the things we care about. It includes the possibility that some people will dislike parts of us.
People pleasing can slowly change these things.
We may edit a joke before we say it, leave out an opinion, agree just to avoid an uncomfortable conversation, or act differently with different people because we want everyone to feel comfortable. After a while, we can lose a clear sense of what is natural for us and what we have learned to do for approval.
Being authentic means letting people see more of who we are, including the parts that some people may dislike.
We can speak with care and respect while using our own voice, expressing our opinions, and allowing our humour and personality to show.
Some people will respond with disapproval, and that is part of authenticity. It gives us the chance to build relationships with people who know us as we are.
Authenticity gets easier when you learn to spot the times you already feel like yourself.
For one week, keep a note on your phone called “More like me.”
Add a line whenever you notice:
I felt energised when…
I lost track of time when…
I felt proud of the way I…
I felt completely at ease when…
At the end of the week, read it back and look for what keeps coming up.
Maybe you feel most like yourself when you are making things, learning, hosting friends, exploring somewhere new, working on a big idea, spending time outside, or having a proper conversation.
Then ask what is underneath that.
Making things → creativity
Exploring → freedom or adventure
Hosting friends → connection
Learning → curiosity
Working on a big idea → ambition or purpose
Time outside → calm or simplicity
Then choose one value and give it a real action this week.
Creativity: make something on Saturday.
Connection: invite a friend for dinner.
Curiosity: take the class you keep thinking about.
Living authentically happens through choices that reflect what matters to you.

Do you ever find yourself being a slightly different version of yourself depending on who you are with?
I think most of us do. Sometimes it is because we want to be liked. Sometimes it is because we do not want to be judged. And sometimes it is because we are protecting ourselves.
This was something John Polley and I got really into when we talked about authenticity. It is not as simple as just being yourself.
You might do completely opposite things in two different situations and still be authentic, because what really matters is the value sitting behind the choice you make.
We talked about people pleasing, shyness, being misunderstood, finding your people, and how much courage it can take to let more of yourself out into the world.
A few things to think about:
What value is driving this choice?
Am I protecting myself, or am I just trying to be liked?
Who makes me feel safe enough to relax and be more myself?
What is one small way I could show a little more of who I am?
If I cannot find my people, could I create the space I need?
I loved something John said: authenticity is the pursuit of ease, not easy.
Have a listen if this is something you have been thinking about too.

What does your ideal day look like?
Write down what your ideal day looks like. Imagine that a miracle happened last night. You dian’t notice it happening, but this morning you woke up in your ideal life.
☀️What does this day look like?
☀️How do you get up?
☀️What problems have disappeared, and what has replaced them?
☀️What do you feel and do?
Be visual, describe as many details as possible because life is in the detail.
What can you do to make one thing from your ideal day reality?
What is coaching, really?
Coaching is not about someone telling you what to do or handing you the answers.
It is about asking questions that make you think differently, help you see what you have not seen before, and work out what to do next.

Maybe your deciding on what to study, what do do after your studies or feeling unfulfilled in your current job.
It’s hard to predict sectors that will bring you financial stability with the way the world is changing.
So go with what you are passionate about and choose something you find fulfilling!
This clip was taken from a podcast episode speaking about a typical coach dilemma: which niche or type of coaching to focus on.
Don’t choose executive coaching just because you think it will make you more money. Choose the type of coaching you enjoy and are good at!
And if many types of coaching “bring you joy” there is no need to limit yourself!
If you are feeling stuck and would like help finding a new direction. Get in touch!

For coaches, like me, who work primarily online, there is a pressure to market ourselves on social media to reach potential clients.
If we don’t feel comfortable competing against professionally made reels, or becoming social media “influencers” we shouldn’t give in to the pressure to do so.
I make reels on Facebook and Instagram it’s true, but I refuse to follow the cookie cutter templated format the algorithms like as it seems really fake.
I hope instead my personality, passion and authenticity comes through.
If you are a coach, a freelancer or in an industry where you need to reach potential clients online, don’t feel pressured into becoming a social media star if it’s not who you are.
There are other ways.
I recently appeared on Coachcast, a podcast for coaches with Ed Stanley and Jane Njogu, where we discussed the pressure to choose a niche.
As I say in this reel, I really enjoy working with clients to help them find their true authority and authenticity.
