I saw this photo and I love what it suggests…
After 32 years of riding, my perspective has changed in ways I never expected. As a young rider, I was always pushing forward, driven to improve, to achieve more, to make things happen. I wanted it, so surely the horse should too… right?
But real growth didn’t come from pushing harder. It came from listening more.
I’ve learned that true success isn’t about control; it’s about teamwork. It’s about togetherness, understanding, and collaboration, not doing things to a horse, but doing things with them.
Horses are honest. They don’t hide confusion, tension, or trust. When you become quieter, not just in body, but in mind, you start to notice what they’re really telling you. And when you listen, they meet you there.
So now I ask a different question, what’s in it for the horse?
If they’re not enjoying the process, something needs to change. Break it down. Make it clearer. Make it fair. Make it engaging. Because when a horse understands and feels comfortable, you don’t get forced obedience… you get willingness.
And willingness changes everything.
Once you build that kind of partnership, there’s nothing better. It’s no longer about control, it’s about trust going both ways. And when you have that, you truly have each other.
I’ve been on this journey for many years, and I’m still on it. I’ve been lucky enough to truly bond with two horses in particular, and there really is nothing better.
