Jersey Round Island Challenge β taking a break
The Jersey Round Island Challenge is the definitive Jersey good news story: five years ago, two friends entered into a good-natured bet involving sport and our beautiful natural environment and coastline, and hundreds of friends, family and colleagues joined in the fun. In the case of the Round Island Challenge, this also represented an opportunity to significantly raise the profile of an incredible charity, The Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation, and the event has directly supported many, many Jersey families of sick children since launch. Roll forward five years and we have seen participants from around the globe, huge recognition from the likes of Red Bull and many others and profile for the charity beyond our wildest dreams.
Despite our very organic roots, we have been able to achieve a level of scale with the assistance of our invaluable volunteers from clubs and the community, not to mention our incredible friends at 3D Events. However this is proving increasingly βchallengingβ and 2019 proved to us that we needed to take a different approach, particularly when we considered health & safety and scalability issues. Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to find the resources and time to respond to these challenges, and the 2020 calendar (and our restrictions to spring tide dates) is extremely full of competing events. The organising committee has therefore decided to take a break in 2020 and we will communicate our future plans for the event at the end of the summer this year.
We are so grateful to all of our friends who have supported the event to date and we really hope that you will keep feeding back to us if you have ideas, comments or hopes for future events.
Love to all
Simon, Aidan & Nigel

Tough conditions for our on water competitors on Saturday.
Well done to everyone!
Wow... What a race on Jersey! π³
Well done to everyone that survived the Jersey Round Island Challenge presented by Gill π―πͺ Big seas forced organisers to adopt "Plan B" on Friday evening before moving into a "Plan C" in the middle of the race on Saturday morning -- the Jersey coastguard shut down part of the course due to wild winds, surging swells and chaotic tidal currents. We've never seen a race stopped halfway through before, which highlights how extreme the ocean conditions were...
So in the end, we didn't go "round" the island, but the "challenge" part of the race certainly lived up to its name π
Congratulations to Verity Thomas who took the women's title and Irish super dark horse Ross McGarry + local legend Andre' Le Geyt who were awarded equal first based on times at the mid-race intermission. Though everyone that simply finished deserves a medal π
We'll have a mega photo gallery up on Facebook in the morning followed by race highlights from what was an unprecedented day in SUP racing history. Big thanks to the organisers and safety officials who pulled off a minor miracle, and cheers to everyone who tuned in for "The World's Longest Live Stream" -- see you next week in Friesland for the non-stop 11 City Tour as The Ultra Paddle League continues πͺ photo Luke Hosty for The Paddle League
