Princess Garden - Snooker (Handicap) Team League

Mechanics A 3 v 5 Services Short Cue Wonders
Having been marooned to bottom place all season long, Services’ first win of the season relives them of their isolation at the bottom of the pile, putting them in touch with fellow strugglers St Thomas’ Tower and St Brelade Steelers who together share a three-way tie of the bottom placing in the league.
Ryan was on the balance of play unlucky to loose out on the first frame having looked solid and in control throughout. Paul Bradbury however, sprung to life with a break stuffed full of brilliant pots from green to pink, taking the game to a black ball finish. One slightly loose safety on the black and the frame was over with yet another blistering pot from Paul. Ryan kept playing as he had been to cruise to a well deserved win in the second, repelling Paul who could only manage a tally of 9 points. Lee Travers took the first frame on the pink but struggled to reach his best against Bob Salkeld who took the second frame for a draw. Robbie Kilpatrick was outplayed in the first against Ernie Bird, who’s good potting and scoring coupled with some small slices of rub of the green saw him comfortably over the line. Robbie, however responded emphatically in the second, scoring 94 points to Ernie’s 1, in a breeze to a draw, the third of the night. Darren Malzard found fluency in the opening exchanges of the first frame finding good length with safety play to force mistakes from Lloyd Letherbarrow upon which he capitalised with a number of early chances to rapidly close-up and then surpass the handicap, only to chug over the line in less convincing manner. The second frame went much the same as the first with Darren scoring well in flashes, however a resurgence mid -frame from Lloyd, who saw more of the ball than in the first, with consecutive good visits that threatened a fight-back. However, this was snuffed out with some fortunate run of the ball from Darren, first flunking a snooker and then flunking the final red to leave Lloyd too far adrift, and seeing the Services over the line for a long awaited first win.

Mechanics B 6 v 2 St Tower Pocket Rockets
In a week of big wins, Mechanics B weren’t to be left out. Bagging themselves 6 points this week lifts Mechanics B to the summit of a back-and-forth midfield squabble and with a substantial three-point cushion. Gaining ground over other reliable contenders for third spot; Mechanics A and Tower Pocket Rockets, who both fell backwards after bruising defeats.
The match was evenly balanced at the halfway mark with Bob Rondel and Bob Proper drawing against Nathan Piziura and Daniel Cavey, respectively. The frames between Bob and Daniel were particularly tense, both decided on the black ball. Indeed in the first Daniel can feel hard-done-by to have succeeded in taking points from the three snookers he needed only to loose out to a cheeky double on the black to the middle pocket by Bob. Thereafter, it was one way traffic, despite closer finishes than the scoreline would suggest, with both Mechanics players getting the better of their counterparts to close out the match 6-2 victors - their biggest win since the first match of the season. Richard Corbet began by beating Alastair Simon 2-0. The flash point of this match-up coming in the first frame when Richard took blue, pink and black to steal the frame away after good early work from Alistair in compiling a 26 break. Lastly, Paul Bullock won a comfortable seventh frame before taking the eighth on a re-spot black to beat James Martin.

St Brelade Steelers 3 v 5 Tower Pirates
Now, the only team without a win to their name, and falling to a narrow defeat, St Brelade’s struggles continue on. A black ball decider in the final frame, relegating the Steelers to a fourth consecutive defeat, this unfortunately, the worst run of form of any team as the season edges towards its midpoint.
Karl Le Fevre took a black ball finish in the first against Steve Wilson, and Gary Boschat made it a promising start for St Brelade when he beat a struggling Scott Le Noa two frames to nil, putting St Brelade 3-1 up. That was as good as it got, however, with the Pirates responding to take the final four frames. Ben Garnier defeating Sean MacDonald and Howard Smith stepping in for the pirates as substitute, beating Steve Thomas.

St Thomas’ Tower 1 v 7 St Lawrence Miniature Rifle Club
The only team to have notched up 7 frames of a night’s play and doing so for the second time already this season, St Lawrence built upon their blistering form of late with another resounding win to buttress their perch atop the table - putting daylight between themselves and St Aubin for the first time this season - ahead by two.
To begin the rout Jordan Proctor took two comfortable frames against Bob Denison. Andre Bonjour and David Proctor followed suit with convincing wins over Connor Davies and Andrew Vibert, respectively. Coasting at 6-0 the opportunity of a rare 8-0 whitewash seemed as though it was on the cards. However, Herbie Brugrabber had other ideas, wrestling the first frame away from Pat Patterson in the first of two tight finishes to rescue St Thomas’ Tower from the edge of a dreaded 8-0 oblivion. Winning the final frame, Pat closed the match out in St Lawrence’s favour, for a win of a quite unequivocal fashion.

Tower Beans 2 v 6 St Aubin
A good win for St Aubin sees them hanging on to St Lawrence’s coattails. This match following the same pattern as Mechanics B’s; the scores tied at 2-2 after four frames after which St Aubin lifted the tempo, winning the last four to dent the Beans’ standing in the league. A result which sees them ebb away from earlier front running and drift down to the bottom of the midfield pack.
Dave Ferre got back on track after a recent dip in form with a good win in his first frame against Aaron Canavan. Aaron responded in the second with breaks of 32, 23 and a 35 clearance to gain parity in stylish fashion. Two dramatic frames followed between Simon Wade and Byron Le Cornu - who returns to action for his first outing in the league this season. Byron’s acute tactical play spared him from the brink, coming back from 25 points behind off the back of some successful snookers to pinch the first frame. But, he was outdone in this regard in the second, when Simon achieved an unlikely victory to take the frame on the pink from 49 points behind, himself successful with a succession of well laid snookers. Chris Blampied proceeded to get the better of Stephen Rive, winning the second frame by a single point for a 2-0 victory. And, Robert Le Moel won two close finishes to also win 2-0 in competition with Andy Richardson.

Tower Royals 16 v 14 St Aubin
In a match containing three very one-sided frames Bob Denison struck the first blow of the night, acquitted himself well on his first outing in the billiards league this season in beating Guy Heys 6 points to 3. In doing so, Bob also took the frame win, just breaking the 200 mark. In contrast Guy, who has been the heaviest scorer in the league thus far managed just 148 points on an off-colour evening. The impressive scoring continued when Richard de la Haye compiled 253 points to score 7 on his way to victory up against Stephen Rive. Stephen was unable to reach the target of 5, with a total of 129 points for a score of 4, and thus sees his handicap reduce for the first time this season (equalling Martin Le Gallais with the longest run without a handicap reduction). By far the best billiard player of the week was Peter Allen who joins an exclusive trio of players to have scored 300 points in a league match (in rarified company along with Martin Le Gallais and Guy Heys). With the match tied at 10-10, Peter took the frame win and sealed the match in Tower Royals’ favour, up against Robert Le Moel who was limited to just 4 points, unfortunate to be only 2 shy of earning a fifth point.

Tower T’ree 13 v 13 Services
This top of the table clash ended up being a low scoring battle, though lacked for neither drama nor good scoring. In what became a tense affair. Services however, retain their lead of the league with St Aubin unable to capitalise in their tussle with the Royals.
In what was the first twist of the match, a missed pot from Paul Destro cost him a fifth point, allowing Peter Robinson to come to the table and make an unfinished break of 9, to himself just earn a fifth point with his last shot before time being called on the frame - Peter taking the frame win. Howard Smith and Robbie Kilpatrick both comfortably scored 5 points each in a more free flowing encounter, with Robbie taking the frame win. Following which, Malcolm Malzard and Martin Le Gallais played out a cagey frame. The scores tight right to the line. After all was said and done Martin managed to take the frame win by a margin of only 4 points, however in doing so could only score 3 points to Malcom’s 4 leaving the teams tied on the night and separated by just a single point in the league standings.

Princess Garden - Snooker (Handicap) Team League

- Services Short Cue Wonders 3 v 5 St Lawrence Miniature Rifle Club
St Lawrence, looking to maintain their pressure on St Aubin in the battle for top spot in the league came to a Services side struggling to pick up points thus far this season. St Lawrence though, found a way to win in a contest which was evenly balanced at 3-3 prior to the deciding frames of the evening. Ultimately edging a narrow win to capitalise upon St Aubin’s minor slip-up. Pushing past them by a slender point to sit atop the league outright - both teams, unable to be separated, having jointly occupied the top spot in recent weeks.
Proceedings began with Paul Destro standing in for Lee Travers, up against Jordan Proctor. A break of 19 put Jordan on his way to a comfortable first frame, but he was held by Paul in a closer second frame. The next match-up of the evening also ended in a draw but under more fortunate circumstances. A scrappy encounter between Darren Malzard and David Proctor ensued, David making the most of easy openings in the first to cruise to a comfortable win, the second a tighter and lower scoring frame looked also to be heading the way of David and St Lawrence but for the gloss of an outstanding pot on the final black to be stolen away when the cue ball had just enough pace to agonisingly find its way to the opposite corner pocket. Robbie Kilpatrick achieved lift-off in emphatic manner with a cooly taken 41 clearance in the first frame. Assuring a stylish end to his hunt for an allusive and long awaited first frame win of the season, up against Pat Patterson. Pat, himself in good form with 8/10 this season, responded with good potting and solid scoring of his own in the second frame to draw things even, leaving the result of the match very much in the balance, with play tied at 3-3. Last on were Ryan Swann and Andre Bonjour, Andre had the better of two steady frames, remaining calm and collected to run out the winner by comfortable margins in both frames, and extend St Lawrence’s winning form.

- St Aubin B 4 v 4 St Thomas’ Tower
After five consecutive wins St Aubin’s winning run was finally held, this draw the first blemish on their record all season, let slip there hold on the league’s top spot. Though, they remain unbeaten to this point as was reflected in the evenings play, with all players taking a frame each for honours even all round.
Strong scoring by Bob Denison secured the first frame against Martyn Le Gallais who was punished for being unable to take colours with the reds in the early stages. Though, in the second frame Martyn managed to keep pace with Bob, and a well played snooker on the brown gave Martyn the upper hand, accruing 11 points in fouls following which he potted brown and blue to leave Bob out of contention, needing snookers. In similar fashion to the previous frames, good potting from Andrew Vibert meant he established an unassailable lead in his first frame against Chris Blampied, however Chris was able to peg Andy back in potting the final black, to level the scores again. Having managed half-centuries in three consecutive weeks, breaks of 35 and 61 saw Aaron Canavan excel in his first frame, achieving a complete shut out against Connor Davies who failed to pot a ball. Connor replied to show his ability in the second frame, capitalising upon openings with a good display of potting to comfortably out score Aaron. Lastly, Robert Le Moel was the better man of a second black ball finish going the way of St Aubin against Herbie Bruggrabber. Herbie battled back to take a second, close frame, ending play with a fluked pink to seal a forth draw of the night and of course a draw overall.

- St Brelade Steelers 3 v 5 Mechanics A
In hosting Mechanics A, St Brelade succumbed to the same scoreline as the previous week - falling to a 5-3 defeat and making no headway in the league table. Their only consolation being that the teams around them - Services and Tower Pirates also lost by the same scoreline leave things very much as they stood with regards to the standings at the foot of the table. By contrast, another win sees Mechanics A hold 4th in the league, up-front in a tight midfield battle.
Paul Bradbury opened up with a win on the pink in a high scoring first frame, after which Gary Boschat clicked through the gears to win by distance in the second frame. Craig Jones ground out a draw with Bob Salkeld, both winning a frame each, decided by tense black ball finishes. In his clash with Lloyd Letherbarrow, Steve Thomas was unable to make up the difference in handicap despite better play from the St Brelade’s man than in recent weeks. Lloyd securing a handy 4-2 lead for Mechanics A with two frames to play. With it all to do and despite beginning with a hefty 63 point deficit by way of handicap, Karl Le Fevre made light work of the first frame, aided by a lovely break of 43, almost entirely shutting out Ernie Bird who was limited to single figures. Karl was unable to expand upon his commanding first frame performance, with Ernie keeping proceedings tighter. Needing and getting a snooker on the colours, Karl looked like he might get the job done but that possibility was extinguished when Ernie sunk the pink to wrap up the match for the Mechanics.

- Tower Pirates 3 v 5 Mechanics B
Stephen Morgan shaved a close but high scoring frame against Paul Bullock before Paul responded in kind by winning a second similarly high scoring frame on the black to kick start a five frame run for Mechanics B. Richard Corbert duly proceeded by winning two comfortable frames against an out of form Scott Le Noa. Following which Bob Rondel edged two very tight but high scoring frames against Steve Wilson. Last on were Ben Garnier and Bob Proper, Ben taking the first frame to end Mechanics run, before clearing the pink and black in the final frame to knick the win by just two points, and salvage a more respectable margin of defeat for the Pirates.

- Tower Pocket Rockets 5 v 3 Tower Beans
With both teams on equal points before the nights play, and towards the front of the midfield battle, who ever ended up the victor of this match was poised to hold the bragging rights of being the leading Tower team in the league to this point. A close squabble ensued with three of the four head-to-heads drawn, and it was Nathan Piziura who ended as the man of the match being the only victor.
Daniel Cavey and Stephen Rive played out the opening draw. The first frame went Stephen’s way after some great battling from Dan, who performed well to make up a 35 handicap which Stephen played far above. With both players making good of scoring opportunities the finely balanced frame was settled when Stephen held his nerve to pot a stunning black, the full length of the table, off the bottom cushion. A scrappier second frame in which the colours became tied up quickly was taken by Daniel who took advantage of a missed snooker escape to clear blue to black and knick it at the line. Back-to-back breaks of 28 for Nathan Piziura up against an under-firing Dave Ferre secured the first frame and a further break of 28 in the second frame wrapped up a routine win for Nathan Piziura to put the Pocket Rockets in front. James Martin leant on his good all-round match play to be untroubled in putting away the first frame against Simon Wade. Having been limited to few chances in the first, Simon grew into the second frame, backing-up some stunning long pots with breaks in the high teens to keep James well at bay and out of contention in the second frame, ultimately earning a fair draw. Andy Richardson found parity with Alastair Simon in which both players blew hot and cold. Andy won the first frame comfortably and likewise Alastair the second to secure the win.

Princess Garden - Billiards (Handicap) Team League

- Services 18 v 13 St Aubin
Having fallen down the table two weeks ago, a good result last time out and a big win against top of the table St Aubin sees Services resurgent, leaping from third to first in the league, having made up a five point deficit across the past two rounds of fixtures to sit one point clear atop the table.
A steady performance from Robbie Kilpatrick inside his target of 5 points was enough for the frame win. Meanwhile Robert Le Moel was restricted to just 4 points, dipping after having put in some strong performances in previous weeks. Paul Destro performed well in earning himself six points, though this was not enough to beat Richard de la Haye to the frame win, who comfortably scored 5 points. Things really spiced up in the final frame when Malcolm Malzard scored 269 (the most of anyone in this round of fixtures) to make 7 points and build upon Services’ solid start. All the while, making a break of 31 amidst some tidy play up against Guy Heys who also had a break of 31 but stalled at the end of the match and not only lost the frame but could only manage 4 points - his handicap dropping for the first after a great start to the season.

- Tower T’ree 15 v 13 Tower Royals
Tower T’ree’s match up with the Royals was a more routine affair with all players scoring 5 points except for Scott Le Noa who fell to just 3. All three Tower T’ree players took frame wins - Peter Robinson bettering Daniel Cavey, Howard Smith out scoring Stephen Rive and Martin Le Gallais most notably making breaks of 33 and 54 - the highest of the season so far to beat Scott Le Noa.

Princess Garden - Snooker (Handicap) Team League

Mechanics B 3 v 5 Mechanics A
After being the better man of a black ball finish in the first, Paul Bradbury made lighter work of things in the second frame to earn a 2-0 lead for the A-team (himself with 3 wins from 5 matches in an impressive start to the season) and hand Bob Rondel his first loss of the season. Mechanics B’s super sub Jeremy Gogan stepped up next and despite netting an enticing break of 52, he went on to lose his first frame to Robert Salkeld. Unperturbed, a break of 38 in the second from Jeremy pulled back a frame for Mechanics B to begin a run of frames that we see them haul back their 3-0 deficit, a task taken on and completed by Paul Bullock who won his two frames against Lloyd Letherbarrow to earn parity on the night. The evergreen Ernie Bird however, could not be shaken. Winning the first frame against Richard Corbert, (who has missed the past couple weeks of play following a strong start to the campaign with two wins from two), and then taking a low scoring and quite possibly tense final frame to take victory and earn the bragging rights for the A-team in this all Mechanics clash.

Services Short Cue Wonders B 3 v 5 St Aubin
Having suffered four straight matches without a win so far this season, Services had the chance to end their woes against the reigning champions St Aubin, who again find themselves sitting atop the league table. But as all champions tend to do, with the match finely balanced at 3-3, St Aubin found a way to win. Their solid start to the season was extended by two striking frame wins by captain Robert Le Moel up against Ryan Swann. With Ryan Swann in control of the first frame, Robert who had struggled to pot for much of the frame came alive with one red remaining. Finding electric form right when it mattered most, Robert took the final red with the pink followed by three consecutive and well made doubles on the baulk colours, every shot a superb pot, to swing the momentum of the frame back in his favour. Nicking the remains colours to take the frame on the black. A second equally tight frame saw Robert seal the match and yet another win for St Aubin, their fifth in succession. Prior to the finale, the first frames of the evening were shared between Lee Travers and Martyn Le Gallais, in what were two delightfully watchable frames, a mix of good potting and compelling safety play to earn each player a deserved frame a-piece. Next, Chris Blampied extended Robbie Kilpatrick’s difficult run of form by winning his two frames to put St Aubin in the lead in what ended up being two scrappy frames. A compelling bought of safety play on the colours of the first frame, in which both players traded repeated attempts at escaping well laid snookers, was the point of intrigue in frames in which neither of these former island champions were really able to hit the heights that the reputations suggest. Aaron Canavan can consider himself desperately unlucky not to have gained anything from his two frames against Darren Malzard. Aaron was much the better player with breaks of 30 and 53 in the first and putting together a top quality 47 in the second, which looked for all intents and purposes to be a clearance in the making, but for an unexpected miss on the blue. A victim of the deficit of his handicap rather than good play from his opponent left the match in the balance, with Darren picking off the final colours in the first and Aaron Canavan potting the black but following it in in the second to finish off empty handed.

St Lawrence Miniature Rifle Club 5 v 3 St Brelade Steelers
Joint top of the league at the start of the nights play, and given St Aubin’s penchant for winning this season, St Lawrence new they would have to bring their a-game, up against an always strong St Brelade line-up, if they were to keep up the pressure and their tilt at the league title. Andre Bonjour couldn’t get St Lawrence off to the start they wanted, held-up by the streetwise Gary Boschat who won a comfortable first frame before pinching a closer second. St Lawrence showed their fortitude thereafter, responding with five frame wins from the remaining six to maintain their strong winning form of late. David Proctor began the fight back, continuing his good run this season, with a win against Sean McDonald who fell foul of the rub of the green, in particular losing their first frame after running in-off the black. Upon his return after a lay-off from league play Martin Houguez did well to split frames with Karl Le Fevre. Karl won the first frame comfortably potting extremely well and scoring with nearly every visit to the table. His head of steam however was halted in the second frame, when a fortunate Chinese snooker on the yellow from Martin, with a red in the jaws of one top pocket and the black in the jaws of the other, landed Karl in trouble. Miss cuing and subsequently finding himself snookered tight behind the yellow on his next visit meant enough foul points were conceded to leave Karl out of contention for the frame, eventually conceding with reds remaining. Pat Patterson and Steve Thomas were last on for the night, Pat making the better of the final frames to tie up another win for St Lawrence and extend two contrasting runs of form for each player. - Pat having won all but one of his frames played this season (7/8) and Steve having only picked up one frame thus far this season (1/6).

Tower Beans 5 v 3 St Thomas’ Tower
Unbeaten so far this season, Stephen Rive took both frames against Bob Denison, adding to his win last week, to see himself shoot up the averages at a rapid rate. With a 40 point margin of victory in the first frame and a 30 point margin in the second, Stephen Rive ensured that the Beans proceeded with an untroubled start to the evening. In similar fashion, Andy Richardson bookended the night with a 2-0 win over Herbie Bruggraber, the first a black ball finish and the second a more comfortable affair. Like Stephen, Andy Richardson also won last time out to make it four frames on the bounce for the pair, confirming them as the main driving force behind Tower Beans resurgence to winning ways over the course of the past two matches, which sees the Beans climb to the top of a cue of ‘midfield’ teams in the league table. Sandwiched in between was a draw between Andrew Vibert and new comer to the league, Simon Wade. Simon nicking the first with a black ball finish. And, Connor Davies dealt Dave Ferre a rare loss, breezing to a win in the first with strong scoring, and just pinching the second frame on the black after a rallying response from Dave, in what ended up a very high scoring frame.

Tower Pirates 2 v 4 Tower Pocket Rockets
With two frames left to play Tower Pocket Rockets find themselves in a strong position to extend their lead against the Pirates in a bid for a forth win from five matches so far this season. Steve Wilson and Daniel Cavey found themselves to be each other’s equal on the night, both taking a comfortable frame win each to begin. In the same vain Stephen Morgan and Nathan Piziura followed suit. Though it was James Martin who gave the Pocket Rockets their advantage, beating Scott Le Noa to the line in a black ball finish in the first, after both players had compiled breaks, James 22 and Scott 21, in a frame of high quality play. James compounded his ascendency by taking the sixth frame of the night by a scoreline which suggested he had more breathing space than in the first. It remains to be seen whether the Pocket Rockets can make good on this promising position ahead of the remaining frames to be played - likely to be between Ben Garnier and Alistair Simon.

Princess Garden - Billiards (Handicap) Team League

St Aubin 15 v 13 Tower T’ree
Up against Martyn Le Gallais, Richard de la Haye, with limited openings, struggled to score with breaks of significance, again not at his best in falling to a finish of just 3 points scored for the third time this season. In contrast Martyn did enough to reach his target of 5 quite comfortably. Peter Robinson faced up against Guy Heys who was in blistering form, raising the bar in terms of scoring this season with 350 points scored in the frame, including two breaks in the 30’s and three breaks in the 20’s, for a well deserved 7 points. Consequently, Peter restricted to less table time just managed to get over the line with 3 points. The last frame of the night was a much closer battle. A good break of 30 from Robert Le Moel allowed him to pull ahead of Howard, who proceeded to claw back the deficit, taking a slender lead into the final minutes of the match. Yet, in the closing stages an unfinished break of 15 from Robert meant he pinched the frame by just 4 points, right at the death. Both players in stride with their respective handicaps, scoring 5 team points on the night. Overall a good nights work by St. Aubin, winning be enough over their top of the table rivals to see them return to the summit of the league table by a single point over Tower T’ree.

Tower Royals 13 v 16 Services
In contrast, this was a bottom of a table clash, but a good hall of points sees Services off bottom, swapping places with the Royals and gaining ground back on the top teams above them. Proceedings were begun by Paul Destro finding good form to take a respectable haul of points and beat Andy Richardson by a margin of 6 points to 3. Malcolm and Malzard and Robbie Kilpatrick held stroke, each taking 5 points and frame wins against Daniel Cavey (4 points) and the ever improving Stephen Rive, who extends his handicap again, with another haul of 6 points for the third time this season.
