Sterling in shock England call-up 10/09/2012

RAHEEM STERLING has earned a shock call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

The Liverpool youngster is one of three players drafted in as cover after Theo Walcott was ruled out of tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine due to illness.

Tottenham’s Jake Livermore joins the squad while Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana also gets the nod for the first time.

Walcott has returned to Arsenal after waking up feeling unwell.

Daniel Sturridge is also a doubt for the clash at Wembley after missing this morning’s training session due to stomach cramps.

England boss Hodgson said: "Theo has picked up some sort of virus. He was quite violently ill last night.

"Daniel trained yesterday with stomach cramps but today woke up with the same stomach cramps.

"The doctor advised us to keep him out of training and see how things are. The doctor is quite confident he will be okay, though.

"I can only hope nothing is going round the squad. That was why we were quite keen to get Theo home as soon as possible and also keep Daniel away from the squad.

"I have to hope it's just an isolated case with the two players."

That has brought about the surprise inclusion of Sterling who is yet to even appear for Stuart Pearce’s Under-21s.

The winger has played for England at U16, U17 and U19 level and had made just three appearances for the Reds before this season.

But he has been at the centre of a tug-of-war with Jamaica, the country of his birth, whose coach Theodore Whitmore admitted he had his eye on the 17-year-old.

Livermore, 22, made his senior England debut in the friendly victory against Italy in August.

While Lallana, 24, has played just one game for the U21s but has impressed in the Premier League with the Saints this term.

Hodgson added: "It was a good opportunity to invite some young players to come in and be part of the atmosphere.

"We still have enough good players to be able to deal with the game but it's always good when you have the chance to invite these players to come in and see how things are."
