Jamaica’s financial regulator, the Financial Services Commission, said it aims to publish an updated assessment of Hurricane Melissa insurance claims next Friday, as it presses insurers over payouts that some households and businesses are still waiting to receive. “Nearly a year after Hurricane Melissa, many households and businesses are still waiting for their insurance claims to be settled,” said Keron Burrell, the commission’s executive director, in a release issued on Thursday.

We belong to a Caribbean forged by slavery and colonial exploitation into resistance and political independence. At 8 p.m., Black River once became quiet by habit. Shop lights dimmed, the streets emptied, and the town settled into the familiar stillness of night. Today, Black River is quiet for a different reason. On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa devastated our town, disrupted livelihoods, weakened local businesses, and left many families facing the harsh reality of poverty. It destroyed sea defences, utilities, schools, hospitals, clinics, infrastructure, homes and, tragically, historical and heritage sites.
