The Ministry of Health and Wellness is again urging Jamaicans to limit their exposure to Saharan dust currently affecting the island, warning that excessive exposure can trigger respiratory and other health problems. In a health alert issued Saturday, the ministry said the dust particles can increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory infections and allergies.

A 78-year-old licensed firearm holder from Portland has been charged with assault and a gun-related offence following an alleged confrontation in his community a week ago. He has been charged with assault at common law and using a firearm to commit a scheduled offence in connection with an incident on Saturday, May 23, a police statement said.

Jamaica has no Ebola cases, the Ministry of Health and Wellness confirmed Saturday. It also said eight passengers who arrived on several flights with travel histories linked to “affected countries” have been placed under mandatory self-quarantine. The ministry said all eight individuals, identified through heightened surveillance at the island's ports of entry, have shown no symptoms associated with the virus.

The Court of Appeal has upheld the unlawful wounding conviction of a woman who attacked her sister on in 2023, but suspended her 18-month prison term for three years, sparing her immediate incarceration. The court ruled on Friday that the original custodial term was disproportionate to that of her co-convicts. The appeal was filed in 2024 and arguments heard in December 2025.
