Barita Backs Chess Rapid Tournament

Barita Investments Limited has provided its support to the second staging of the exciting rapid chess tournament that is held annually at the UWI. The Barita Chess Open will take place on April 27, 2019 at the University of the West Indies and will feature top chess Masters, including National Champion Shreyas Smith and National Junior Champion Malik Curriah. Play will take place with 20 minutes given to each player to complete the game, along with 5 second increments given after each move. The event is organized by MR Games who welcomes Barita as the headline sponsor, and whose vision for promoting strategic thinking and calculated decision making skills among youth aligns with the aspiring goals of the tournament. Sections and prizes (all prized quoted are in Jamaican dollars, and ratings quoted are based on the Jamaica Chess Federation)

Open Section – open to all players and rated by FIDE:
First place $25,000 Second place $15,000 Third place $10,000; Best Female

Under 1800 JCF rating sections:
Amateur: 1st $5000 2nd $3000 3rd to 4th Prizes, Best Female
Under 16 (Under 1800): 1st $5,000 2nd $3000 3rd to 5th Prizes, Best Under 14 1st to 3rd, Best Female
Under 12 (Under 1800): 1st $5,000 2nd $3000 3rd to 5th Prizes, Best Under 10 1st to 3rd, Best Female

Schedule
Rounds: 1 – 9 am, 2 – 10:10 am; 3 – 11:30 am; Lunch 12:30-1:30; 4 – 1:30 pm; 5 – 2:50 pm; 6 – 4:00 pm
Clocks start promptly at 9 am without any exceptions. Players who are not present by 10 am will be removed from the tournament.

Early registration: Open now until April 20 and costs $2500
Late registration: Starts April 21 and ends April 24 and costs $3000
