Last year we honored a sailor who is just fabulous. If you have had the opportunity to chat with Billy Thompson, you know he is a passionate guy and a stalwart community member of the MBYC. In addition to having more years of sailing experience than anyone in the fleet (he knows the currents/winds/tides of Montego Bay better than most)! The honor we bestowed was that of ‘Sportsmanship’ as one of the teams at Jamin lost a halyard after the second day of racing. Billy spent time and energy assisting the team with replacing their halyard, by getting winched up the mast of his own cruiser to thread it back through the top of the mast! Needless to say, it didn’t matter that the boat he was assisting was in a deadlock for the same position on the final race day… but that’s what Billy is all about, fair sailing and honoring the sport!
So if you see him around the club, buy him a beer and listen to a story about sailing/fishing/anything!

Sailing in MoBay is pretty incredible any time of year. But when the winter begins up north and we have this pristine blue water and glorious sunshine and prevailing winds, where would you rather be?

This weekend is the Peter Harper Memorial One Day Series of Action, Danger and Adventure. RAce Ociffer is and racing is proceeding as planned for tomorrow: skippers meetings at 10 am. Entry fee will be your memories of Peter at the prize giving planned for 2.00 pm. See you all tomorrow!

Ironically back on a plane to Miami but here is a note from July 2019:

“Little note I wrote on the plane to Miami:

Peter Harper was an institution at the MBYC. I fondly remember when he was building Skylarking (just across the ramp from where his faithful Zipper rests between races) and all the day-trips we took on her once she was complete. My 6th Grade class at Junior Plus took Jane out around graduation time for a sunset cruise over to the Houseboat!

Peter was a splendid sailor and his love for the water was unparalleled. He was a great sport and always had a kind word and a laugh for you at the finish, no matter the outcome of the day’s series.

I was also fortunate enough to have a sail with Peter on his tri-cat Skedaddle (in mid-May with him at the helm, just for a time-line). Fantastic day of cruising and getting soaked on the bow!

Rest in Paradise 🏝⛵️
- Awesome! Captain, Spencer and the Mays

We are missing all our foreign friends EXTRA right now! Going to get our acts together for a but only time will tell! In the meantime, we were able to get 4 new sailors through a weekend of hands-on sailing after a few hours of online zoom courses! They did a terrific job and we look forward to having them within our ranks in the coming regattas and for some pleasure cruising!
