has increased pressure on the United States by imposing sanctions and export restrictions on dozens of American companies in 2026. The moves are part of a growing trade and technology battle between the world’s two largest economies.
In August 2026, China targeted six U.S. companies and organizations, including Applied DNA Sciences, Stratum Reservoir, Altana Technologies, the Responsible Business Alliance, Verité Group, and Human Rights in China. Beijing said the measures were retaliation for U.S. restrictions on 43 Chinese companies accused of human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
China also tightened restrictions on drone exports and related technologies, targeted companies involved in compliance work with U.S. regulators, and launched national security investigations into imported printing software and office equipment.
In June 2026, China announced another wave of restrictions. It banned Chinese government agencies from purchasing products made by 46 American companies, including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing’s defense division, General Dynamics, and Anduril Industries.
China also imposed export controls on 10 U.S. companies, including drone manufacturer Teal Drones and rare earth companies MP Materials and USA Rare Earth. These restrictions limit their access to certain Chinese-made components and technologies, including materials used in advanced industries.
The June measures came after the United States expanded its list of Chinese companies considered linked to the country's military. That list included major businesses such as Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD.
Although many American defense companies have limited business in China, restrictions on rare earth materials, drone components, and other critical technologies could have wider effects on global supply chains.
The bigger picture: China and the United States are increasingly using trade restrictions, sanctions, and technology controls against each other. As tensions grow, businesses worldwide could face supply problems, higher costs, and greater uncertainty.
