Hokkaido Powder Trip Pre-Flight Check — for the curious traveler
Planning a guided backcountry or powder program in Japan this season? Five minutes of homework protects your whole trip. Here's what to look for before you book:
✓ Travel Agency Registration Number
Any operator selling packaged tours commercially in Japan must hold a registered travel agency license (旅行業登録). It's a real number, publicly verifiable. If it's not on their website or booking page, ask for it. No number = unlicensed.
✓ Japanese Business Registration
Look for a corporate entity registered in Japan. An overseas company running trips here without Japanese registration is operating in a legal grey zone — which becomes your problem if you need emergency support, refunds, insurance claims approved, or any kind of recourse. That grey zone is shrinking — scrutiny and enforcement are expected to rise this season.
✓ Guide Qualifications — Listed, Not Implied
Avalanche certification level (AAA, CAA, AIARE), wilderness medicine credentials (WFR, WEMT, EMT), years of in-region experience, and Japanese language ability should all be clearly stated. Vague language like "experienced guides" or "safety first" without specifics is a gap, not a credential.
✓ Local Commercial Insurance
Japanese liability insurance covering backcountry guiding and client injuries. Not home-country insurance, not travel insurance — operator-held, Japan-specific coverage.
✓ A Physical Address in Japan
Your guide should actually live here. Conditions, local relationships, emergency contacts, and terrain knowledge are all different when someone is present year-round versus flying in for the season. If they are flying in, they need a valid Japanese work visa — that's not a grey area, it's the law. Those who treat it as optional make it harder for everyone who does the paperwork, pays the fees, and respects the system.
I post this every season because I see good people get caught out. Hokkaido is worth doing right.
Hokkaido International Adventure Masters Co., Ltd. — registered Japanese corporation, Higashikawa. AAA Pro 1 / WEMT / 20+ years field operations. Happy to answer any of the above for our own programs, or just help you ask the right questions before booking anywhere.

Winter Equipment Rentals – Q&A

Q1: What equipment do you rent?
A: Avalanche safety kits (beacon, shovel, probe, packs), snowboards, splitboards (with skins), and snowshoes. Inventory is limited.

Q2: Is this a guided service or just rentals?
A: Rentals only. No guiding, instruction, supervision, or transportation is included unless separately contracted.

Q3: Who are these rentals best suited for?
A: Experienced winter travelers who are comfortable selecting terrain, using their equipment properly, and operating independently.

Q4: Do you rent to beginners?
A: We rent equipment, not skills. Renters are responsible for ensuring they have the experience and training needed to use the equipment safely.

Q5: Do you require a deposit?
A: All rentals require a credit card. High-value rentals use a card-on-file authorization. In some cases (e.g., shipped or unusually high-value rentals), a refundable security deposit may be required.

Q6: What happens if equipment is damaged or lost?
A: Renters are responsible for loss, theft, damage, missing components, excessive cleaning, and late returns. Repair or replacement costs may apply.

Q7: Can I rent equipment for multiple days?
A: Yes, subject to availability. Multi-day rentals must be arranged in advance.

Q8: Do you offer same-day or last-minute rentals?
A: Sometimes, depending on availability. Same-day or rush rentals may require additional coordination.

Q9: Do you offer shipping or courier delivery?
A: In some cases, yes. Shipping is to confirmed lodging or pickup centers only. Shipping costs and insurance apply.

Q10: How do I book or check availability?
A: Send us a message with your dates, the equipment you’re looking for, and whether you prefer pickup or shipping. We’ll confirm availability and next steps.

Privileged to train with our local Police, Fire, Asahidake Visitor Center, volunteer Ski Patrol and SAR team (which I am a member), and Yamamoritai Group today. We are working hard to improve EMS response, best practices, and unified capabilities to respond to incidents and accidents in an uncontrolled rapidly growing Backcountry usage area. Teamwork makes the dream work and these trainings are vital to positive patient outcomes and increased professional standards and expectations.

This was nearly 20 years in the making; from my first Wilderness Medical Associates WFR course at Outward Bound in 2005 to teaching with Team WMA Japan now. I'm grateful to have such incredible mentors and students to share the "culture of continuous improvement" with. Going to sleep every night feeling happy-tired has been very fulfilling.

Grateful to work and with:

What I'm accomplishing now is what I decided to do six years ago. Visions from that fateful day are reality now because I made them so. I've got even older plans that will come true soon enough. Never mess with a man on a mission.

Until I see you again in heaven my little buddy. Until then you will be with me in my heart everyday. Thank you for sharing the best gift ever with me; Sami was a healer and an angel.

Mick and Chris, pedal to the metal on HokkaidoWilds.org Shiretoko Expedition, Day One, Hour One. Sorry Haidee Thomson we didn't behave as promised.

This Illinois boy is still getting used to the open ocean and it's associated lumps and bumps [Insert metaphore about life here], so the afterburners kicked in and I stuck with my wingman Chris J.T. Auld for the duration of our trip. Going fast was my only comfort in conditions that were uncomfortable.

Expedition success = a fully loaded shuttle rig and lots of smiles. The Shiretoko Kayak Expedition was superb.

Big thanks for:
for being the trip instagator and lots of translation, preparation, and planning
for keeping us in check and putting up with a group of dudes
for being a Backcountry gourmet and another OG in outdoor education
for being good vibes all the time and rocking my kayak in the big conditions
for being my expedition senpai and wingman when conditions were big and rough
*We followed some guide book information of Shiretoko kayak legend Shinya-san*

the 18 point curriculum of knowledge, skills, abilities, and expedition behavior I learned during a 28 day Backcountry National Standards Program in 2002 established the solid wilderness travel & living foundation I have now. Those lessons were just as valuable then as they were this week.
