PARIS OLYMPICS ATHLETE INTRO SERIES:
PHILLIP SEIDLER🇳🇦
After introducing the host nation swimmers, we’ll be introducing the swimmers in descending order.
Namibian Phillip Siedler became the first Namibian to ever qualify in the open water last Olympics. As we’ve covered in years past, Seidler trained in a small confined 25m pool under the guidance of his mother as coach. This Olympic cycle Seidler was the fastest african swimmer at the qualifying swim, beating geographical neighbours South Africa.
*The OWM qualifying rank is based on the order that the athletes have qualified.

🇿🇦DE JAGER FORCED TO GIVE UP OLYMPIC SPOT
South African swimmer Amica De Jager qualified for an Olympic spot through the criteria set by World Aquatics. In the race she was the fastest African, clinching the continental spot in a time of 1:58.38.60 (1min, 11secs behind winner). Amica finished 27th in the world and had earned South Africa an Olympic spot in marathon swimming at the Paris 2024 event.
However, as part of the process of going to the Olympics, the country must accept spot given to them and ratify what athlete/s they will be sending to represent them at the games. South Africa did not accept the spot and in doing so did not send De Jager. Although she had qualified, South Africa made their own decision as they believed Amica was not strong enough to represent them at the Olympics.
As a result the African continent will not be represented in Paris. 🇵🇪Peru has been awarded the spot in the event as the next fastest swimmer under the world aquatics criteria.

WHAT A RACE!
World Championships never disappoint. Leonie Beck of Germany stayed back throughout the early stages of the race only to make a dash in the last lap. Chelsea Gubecka of Australia proved that last year’s surprise win in Eilat was not a fluke. The young prominent distance swimmer Katie Grimes found her footing in the open water taking the lead halfway into the race.
The three podium swimmers have qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
