The 80th LeMans passed with Audi taking home the cup with their disguised 918. Motoring scribe Micheal Stahl sent us this pearler about the deadly 917. What a looker.

[MS] You were one of the first to drive the Porsche 917, in the 1969 Nurburgring 1000. When they offered you the Le Mans drive, you famously told them, "I never wanted to be the quickest bloke in motor racing, just the oldest. And that Porsche is going to interfere with my plans."
[Frank Gardener] "Yup. Yup. To start off with, if you make an ally chassis, everywhere you weld it, you anneal it, so you've lost a lot of your torsional rigidity. So it wasn't the smartest chassis in the world. Secondly, it wasn't the smartest engine . You take the first chapter 917. Frank Gardner drives Porsche at Nurburgring, a circuit designed by Hi**er for Jewish drivers, and to complement that, that Porsche was made. It was an unbelievably tricky car to drive. That same car was purchased by John Woolf, a privateer. First lap
at Le Mans, severely dead, end of motor car . But they threw bucketloads of money at it, and the 917s moved into a professional world with people like Pedro Rodriguez and all these heroes that, y'know, had a lot of trouble gettin' into the motor car, basically because their balls hit the chassis.
Certainly, if you ever wanted to inherit some marvellous award like the VC of motor cars, you drove a 917 at high speed."
