Building up drills based on basics/fundamental skills is a very useful learning method. This is the usual range and use of stances and movement we derive from our study of Shorin-ryu. Using "sticky hands" to receive, agile stance changes and short heavy striking to break stance to facilitate takedowns.

Hi karate friends around the world, just want to let you know about events in Okinawa you will not want to miss on and near Karate Day 2026!
October 25th Karate Day - The 100 Kata for Karate Day Challenge - 8am start at Naminoue Tsuji Beach - the only event open to all participants on Karate Day this year!
November 6th - The Ryukyu Bubishi Symposium and Seminars - Longfist Mantis, White Crane, Taichichuan - an amazing day with instructors from Taiwan and the author of the Ryukyu Bubishi, Liu Kangyi. At the Karate Kaikan. Revelations and insights into the old Bubishi as preserved in Taiwan.

Yesterday was a celebration day for our Asato Dojo family as we enjoyed a fantastic demonstration of karate from our juniors and senior students. They all passed their tests and deservedly earned their promotions. In particular we are very happy and proud to welcome Alain Roy to our Yudansha ranks as he earned shodan after 4 years+ of consistent effort in his own personal development and in active support for our dojo through assisting in the teaching and development of other students. His skillsets and knowledge of Okinawa karate and kobudo has advanced considerably and we look forward to continuing our progress forward with him in our senior ranks.
Also to be congratulated: Oyakawa san for passing his first test with us, Yuuta for successfully "graduating" from our junior class to the senior group and proving his rank there, Manel who is visiting as a guest for several months and gets to take home a very special souvenir in recognition of his hard work here, Jessica who continues to progress steadily on the back of consistency in training and Maki san whose tenacity and hard work underpin her continual progression and achievement.
Lastly but not least our deep gratitude to Arakaki Toshimitsu Hanshi who guides and leads us in our study of Matsubayshiryu karate and kobudo. As always he shared guidance, corrections and insights into traditional Okinawan karate culture with us during the testing.
