Uechi-Ryū is a traditional style of Okinawan karate. Uechi-Ryū means "Style of Uechi" or "School of Uechi".

Originally called Pangai-noon, which translates to English as "half-hard, half-soft", the style was renamed Uechi-Ryū after the founder.

Uechi-Ryu Karate Hojo-Undo

Hojo Undo (補助運動) was designed by Kanei Uechi.
It is the backbone of Uechi-Ryu by learning and repeating the basic techniques of Uechi to be used in Kata ex*****on.
Traditionnaly, Hojo Undo exercises are done after warm up (Jumbi Undo).

Here is a proposal for Hojo Undo sequence :

Shōmen geri (正面蹴り) : Circular Block, Front Kick
Sokutō geri (足刀蹴り) : Circular Block , Side Kick
Seiken zuki (正拳空き) : Circular Block, Closed Fist Punch
Mawashi zuki (廻し空き) : Circular Block, Hook Punch
Hajiki uke hiraken zuki (平拳受け平拳空き) : Tiger Paw Blocks and Strike
Shutō uchi Uraken uchi Shōken zuki (手刀打ち裏拳打ち小拳空き) : Chop, Back-fist, One-knuckle punch
Hiji zuki (肘空き) : Circular block, Elbow strikes
Tenshin zensoku geri (転身前足蹴り) : Turn-Block-Front Kick-Forward Leg
Tenshin kosoku geri (転身前後蹴り) : Turn-Block-Front Kick-Back Leg
Tenshin shōken zuki (転身小拳空き) : Turn-Block-One Knuckle Punch
Hajiki (弾き) : fingertip strikes
Koi no shippo uchi, tate uchi (鯉の尻尾打ち縦打ち) : wrist blocks in four directions
Koi no shippo uchi, yoko uchi (鯉の尻尾打ち横打ち) : Fish-tail wrist blocks
Shinkokyu (深呼吸) : Deep breathing

Kanei Uechi (1911-1991) joined his father Kanbun Uechi in 1927 to work in Wakayama, and began practicing Karate Jutsu Pangainoon. After a long year of hard work Kanei enseigna à Osaka the 1940 to 1942. In 1940 he changed the name of Uechi Ryu style Karate Jutsu (Technical empty hand style Uechi) because the Chinese word Pangainoon was not familiar to the Japanese, and he wanted to honor the name of his father to thank him for his tremendous efforts for bringing Chinese techniques to Okinawa and developing the discipline which is known known as Uechi-Ryu.

Uechi Ryu has its origins in Chinese boxing named Pangainoon (Han Kou Nan). This discipline was taught by SHU Shiwa (1874-1926) in the city of Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province in China. In November 1983, the report sent to the parent by the Uechi Ryu Martial Arts Association of the City of Fuzhou highlighted that SHU Shiwa was a Taoist monk from a rich and noble family. He was tall, with an enormous force, great calligrapher and painter. Expert in various martial techniques created from animal movements such as dragon, crane, etc., it was above all a remarkable specialist fists tiger. Il prit Uechi Kanbun (1877-1948) as disciple 1897 when he arrived at the age of Fuzhou 20 years.
