An island within Tokyo blessed by the Kuroshio Current,
Three reasons why Hachijo Island is loved

Hachijo Island (Hachijojima) is an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean, 290 km south of central Tokyo, with a circumference of about 59 km. The island is strongly influenced by the Kuroshio Current, resulting in exceptionally clear waters, known as “Hachijo Blue” for most of the year.
The underwater world of Hachijo Island is home to many creatures that travel from the south on the Kuroshio Current, including rare butterflyfish, a wide variety of sea slugs, shrimp, crabs, sharks, and migratory fish. Diving around the island, which was formed by volcanic activity, also offers the chance to enjoy the dynamic topography.

Table coral are spawning in Kushimoto!
Report from Nanki Seaman's Club

Kushimoto Town, located at the southernmost tip of Honshu, is known for the coral colonies that have formed there due to the influence of the Kuroshio Current, one of the world’s largest warm currents. Among them, the Acropora hyacinthus, which forms the table coral that symbolizes Kushimoto, spawned en masse on the night of July 13th 2025. This was reported by Nanki Seaman’s Club, a long-established and popular diving center in Kushimoto.

River Diving in Kozagawa, Wakayama Prefecture
Successful Filming the Giant Salamander, the World’s Largest Amphibian

Do you know what special day September 9 is? It is “Giant Salamander Day” in Japan. In honor of that, today I’d like to share something about the rare giant salamander, the world’s largest amphibian.
The information came from Naofumi Ueda of DIVE KOOZA, located in the Nanki region of Wakayama Prefecture. In the clear streams of Kozagawa River, giant salamanders live, and they can be observed through river diving. Basically, you search until you find one. Sometimes you spot one right after entering the river. Other times, after hours of searching, you might see just a portion of its body sticking out from under a rock and then it’s all you catch.

Ocean sunfish appears on Hachijojima! | News & Topics | Marine Diving web 20/08/2025

Hit the jackpot with cold water mass!
Ocean sunfish appears on Hachijojima!

Hachijojima is a popular diving area in the Izu Islands. A rare visitor showed up during the three-day weekend! Here’s a video of it.
Mr. Kotaro Tanaka from the diving center “Concolor”, who filmed this video, says: When the Kuroshio Current moved away from Hachijojima, the island is sometimes surrounded by cold, murky water, cold water mass. This year, for the first time in eight years, we were hit by a cold water mass, and the joy of such times is that the probability of seeing ocean sunfish increases dramatically. This video was taken off the coast of Taredo.
Hachijojima is located about 290 km south of central Tokyo. You can get there by boat from Takeshiba Pier in Hamamatsucho, Tokyo at night and arrive at Hachijojima the next morning, in about 10 hours. Alternatively, you can take a direct ANA flight from Haneda Airport, which takes about 40 minutes, making it easy to visit according to your schedule and preferences.
Why not come and enjoy the dynamic ocean of Hachijojima this summer? You might even be able to see some ocean sunfish!
