SUBJECT: FORMAL RESIGNATION FROM IFO YOUTH CHAIRMAN
Dear Youth of Ifo Refugee Camp,
I am writing to formally submit my resignation from my position as Ifo Youth Chairman, effective immediately, due to serious security threats and concerns regarding my personal safety.
This decision has not been easy for me. I have served in Ifo youth leadership for eight years as Deputy Youth Chairman, dedicating my time, energy and experience to serving the youth and the wider refugee community.
During these eight years, I have worked closely with different organizations, community partners and youth leaders. I have consistently promoted unity, inclusion, equality, peaceful coexistence and equal participation of all communities, including minority and underrepresented groups.
Despite my long service and commitment, I have faced challenges regarding the transition of leadership. I was not allowed to progress from the position of Deputy Youth Chairman to Chairman, despite my experience and years of service. I believe that leadership succession should be based on a transparent, fair and inclusive process rather than external pressure, community affiliation or other considerations.
I have also faced what I consider to be discrimination, harassment, intimidation, threats and unfair treatment in connection with the leadership dispute. Despite attempts to resolve these matters amicably, no satisfactory solution has been reached.
My primary reason for resigning is the security threat and the growing concerns for my personal safety. Under the current circumstances, I no longer feel safe continuing to participate in the leadership structure. I therefore believe that resigning is necessary to protect my safety and dignity.
I also wish to place on record my concerns regarding the individuals and circumstances surrounding the pressure I have experienced, including:
- Abdi Gedi, County Government representative;
- Omar Abdi Gabay, MCA, Damajaley Ward;
- Timijilac, an elder from the host community;
- Some host-community youth and refugees.
During efforts to resolve the matter, I was forced to leave the office. Although the DRS Camp Manager attempted to intervene and find a solution, I believe that continued pressure from some members of the host community contributed to the situation.
My resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing or failure in my responsibilities. It is a decision I have made because of the security threats, intimidation, pressure and unfair treatment that I have experienced.
I remain deeply concerned about the need for inclusive youth leadership in Ifo Refugee Camp. All communities, including minorities and underrepresented groups, should have a fair opportunity to participate in leadership and decision-making.
I respectfully request UNHCR, DRS and other responsible stakeholders to take note of my resignation and independently review the circumstances surrounding the leadership dispute and the security concerns that led to my decision. I further request appropriate measures to ensure my safety and protection from further harassment, intimidation, threats or retaliation.
I would like to sincerely thank the youth of Ifo Refugee Camp for the trust, respect and support they have shown me throughout my years of service. I am especially grateful to the 109 registered sports teams, players, coaches and sports leaders who respected me, worked with me and supported initiatives promoting peace, unity, inclusion and positive engagement among young people. Your respect and cooperation have been among the most meaningful parts of my service.
After eight years of service as Deputy Youth Chairman and 8 months youth chairman, I leave this position with gratitude to the youth, sports fraternity, organizations, community members, partners and fellow youth leaders with whom I have worked. My commitment has always been to serve all communities without discrimination and to promote peace, unity, equality and inclusion.
Thank you all for your trust, respect and support.
Yours faithfully,
Abass Abdullahi
