Medical Support Appeal for Maama Makeba
Dear Friends and Trans Supporters,
Since January, our beloved Maama Makeba has been courageously battling tuberculosis (TB) and a severe aspergillus infection affecting her lungs is a condition that, if left untreated, could lead to cancer. After her initial admission at St. Mary’s Hospital, she was transferred to Kenyatta Hospital, where she has already undergone the charocetisis process to drain fluid and manage life-threatening complications.Despite the immense pain and emotional strain, Maama Makeba’s spirit remains unbroken. She continues to fight with strength and hope while in quarantine, receiving her medical care that is expected to last for another six months.
The total cost of her treatment is estimated at USD 10,000. So far, only USD 500 has been raised through the generosity of friends and well-wishers, leaving a balance of USD 9,500 urgently needed to cover hospital bills, medication, laboratory tests, regular checkups, transport, and recovery support.
Your kind donation, no matter the size, will bring real relief and hope to Maama Makeba during this critical time. Together, we can ensure she receives the care she desperately needs and helps her regain her health, strength, and beautiful spirit.

We had the opportunity to participate in a focus group discussion organised by the Angaza Foundation in partnership with the International PRIDE Centre. The session focused on understanding the challenges faced by the LGBTQI+ community in Kenya and how humanitarian organisations can serve us better.
We spoke deeply about our lived experiences, access to support, safety, and visibility and it was inspiring to hear so many voices come together with honesty, strength, and hope.
Grateful to be part of such an important conversation that centers our realities and pushes for more inclusive solutions.

We were honored to be invited by HIAS and RFSU to take part in a Solidarity Forum bringing together LGBTQI+ persons from the refugee community and the Kenyan LGBTQI+ community. The forum created a safe space to discuss how we can strengthen referral pathways, bridge service access gaps, and build meaningful collaborations that uplift us all.
Together, we continue working towards inclusion, dignity, and equality for every LGBTQI+ person regardless of status or background.

Transgender & gender-diverse refugees and asylum seekers living with HIV, ARVs are more than medicine they’re life, dignity, and hope.
💊ARVs keep the virus undetectable (U=U), protect against infections, and allow our community to thrive.
Access means empowerment, mental well-being, and the chance to live authentically.
But barriers remain: stigma, lack of documents, unsafe clinics, and displacement.
Positive living is possible when we combine ARVs with safe housing, nutrition, mental health, and inclusive healthcare.

We participated in the SRHR workshop organized by HIASKenya, where we learned more about our sexual and reproductive health rights. The workshop brought together refugees, asylum seekers, and the Kenyan LGBTIQ+ host community, fostering learning, inclusion, and solidarity.
