Return Dates Still On Hold But Preparations And Training Underway...🤏

The Kenya Premier League standoff explained.

The delay to the start of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League was caused by a dispute over promotion and relegation rules, particularly the situation involving Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United.

Sharks finished 16th in the Premier League last season, while Mombasa United finished third in the National Super League.

Under the 2019 regulations, the 16th-placed Premier League team was supposed to face the third-placed NSL team in a promotion/relegation playoff. However, under the 2025 structure currently in use, the bottom three Premier League teams are automatically relegated, while the top three NSL teams are automatically promoted.

That difference is what created the deadlock.

Sharks challenged their relegation in court, arguing that the playoff framework should apply. FKF, on the other hand, maintained that the newer 2025 regulations were valid and that there was therefore no need for a playoff.

The Sports Disputes Tribunal upheld the 2025 framework, but subsequent court proceedings produced conflicting directions on whether Mombasa United should be admitted directly into the Premier League or whether the two teams should play a playoff.

That legal uncertainty eventually made it impossible for FKF to confidently kick off the new season.

Now, there has been a major development.

Through out-of-court mediation, Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United have agreed to settle the matter on the pitch.

The two sides will play a two-legged promotion/relegation playoff, with the first leg in Mombasa on October 1 and the return leg in Nairobi on October 6. The clubs have also agreed that their newly registered players will be eligible to feature.

The winner takes the final Premier League place. The loser remains in the NSL.

Once this is settled, it should finally unlock the situation at the top. But the consequences go much further than these two clubs.
