In Lamu, time moves a little differently.

For over 700 years, life has unfolded through these narrow streets, between coral-stone walls, carved doors and the Indian Ocean.

One of East Africa’s oldest living Swahili settlements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lamu carries centuries of stories, craftsmanship and cultural exchange in its architecture and everyday life.

Dhows crossing the channel, donkeys wandering through town, hidden courtyards, sea breezes and mornings that begin with the sound of the island waking up.

The place we are lucky enough to call home.

Vidaka — a beautiful and distinctive feature of medieval Swahili architecture, found along the East African coast and dating back to at least the 14th century in places such as Gede and Siyu.

At Banana House, these details are part of what gives the house its character, connecting the spaces we live in today with the long history of Swahili design and craftsmanship. 🌾✨
