THE FORGOTTEN PURPOSE OF THE GROUP STAGES
Every football tournament tells two stories.
The first is written on the pitch through tactics, resilience, and moments of brilliance. The second is written long before kickoff by tournament regulations. It determines how excellence is rewardedβor ignored.
The group stage exists for one purpose: to establish hierarchy. Across three matches, teams are measured by points, goal difference, goals scored, and consistency. It is football's examination of merit.
Yet many tournament formats abandon that hierarchy when the knockout rounds begin.
Instead of allowing the best-performing teams to earn proportionately easier paths, predetermined brackets classify teams into broad categoriesβgroup winners, runners-up, and third-place qualifiersβbefore assigning knockout opponents. As a result, a team that dominates its group can face a tougher route than another group winner that performed less convincingly.
Qualification is rewarded.
Dominance often is not.
That weakens the very purpose of the group stage. If outstanding performances do not translate into meaningful competitive advantages, why measure them so meticulously in the first place?
Football's unpredictability should come from what happens on the pitch, not from tournament architecture that overlooks excellence already demonstrated.
As international tournaments expand, this question becomes even more important. More teams mean more complex qualification pathways, making it essential that merit remains the guiding principle.
Competitive justice is simple: greater performance should produce greater reward.
The group stage should not merely filter teams into the knockout rounds. It should shape them.
Because examinations only retain their legitimacy when exceptional performance earns exceptional rewards.
