Sailing with Juniors
23rd June 2024
Saturday we had two juniors out on the water, Otto in his Taz and Willa with me in the Pico.
Two newcomers sharing a laser (who almost got divorced) after sailing
Glen (who almost had a broken mast)
Naomi who did quite a few impressions of being a submarine.
Welcome to Jen and Michael! I promise I will give you a boat each next time.🙃
We launched all the lasers to get them clear so I could focus on the children. I then launched Otto in his Taz and followed him out with Willa in the Pico.
It was "blowing old boots" again with some big gusts and a constant flurry of whitecaps all over the harbour.
Glen and Naomi set of on a race whilst Jen and Michael reached back and forth reminding themselves of how rusty their skills were.
Sailing with your wife seems to be a difficult task, so many couple seem to align it with teach your wife to drive! (Another process for divorce!)
Otto was having difficulty in his Taz and it looked like he was taking submarine lessons from Naomi. Willa and I followed him round for a while until we saw the panic in his eyes after the umpteenth capsize.
He was drifting back into the bay holding his capsized Taz, Willa and I followed him in and in a heroic gesture bravery! Willa threw herself over the side of the Pico to help Otto rescue the Taz. It did look good and certainly had a "Hollywood" look to it until she realised she could stand up and walk to Otto.
Otto also then realised he could stand and the colour came back to his cheeks.
We all piled into the Pico and decided to set off after Glen and Naomi. They were already at the first mark so it did not look like we would get close to them. Nonetheless the chase was on and that is just as satisfying as winning.
We rounded the first mark and realised the two lasers were struggling to make it to the next mark which was an upwind mark. Three in a Pico (well one and two halves really) seemed a good weight for the winds.
We chased them upwind, as we closed the gap we noted that Glens mast was bent to almost 30 degrees! He was in a position where any more pressure and it would snap.
We signalled Idi in the rescue boat to take him in and change the mast and that left only Naomi to catch. (Good Plan😳😳😱😱)
Naomi rounded the mark just 30 metres in front of us so it all looked good. By the time we rounded the mark Naomi had caught the downwind and was more than halfway across the bay!
The chase was on again! Off we went with lots of shouting and crew getting well and truly drowned in the spray.
Then! a shout went up!
"Mums has gone over we can catch her!"
Sure enough Naomi was playing submarine captain again.....and again......and again.
We sailed past her as she was sailing the wrong direction (perhaps the constant spinning over had addled her sense of direction?)
NOBODY jumped overboard to help her they were too busy trying to win. We rounded the Club mark and set off on lap 2.
After the first tack we swapped helms and Willa took charge, it was a good clear upwind and she made it look easy! round Secco then another upwind to Elephant.
Otto in the front looked back and shouted "look out Naomi is coming after us!" Sure enough Naomi was on our stern and looked like she was going to close us down.
At this point there was a ship coming into the port, we were well clear and did the cross safely in front of it however; when the ship went through we lost sight of Naomi. We suspected she went off submarining again! we next saw her heading back to the club.
Round Elephant and Willa swapped with Otto on the helm. It was a good day on the water.
Otto took us across the harbour with the directional sense of a "drunken sailor" Two thirds of the way across in a bit of a gust he ploughed the bows of the boat straight under water😱
The boat tilted up and looked like it was emulating the Titanic despite the weight it is was carrying. A quick rescue mission was done by the instructor and we all calmed down and sailed serenely across the finish line for a good win.
