There has been some seriously competitive racing in recent weeks.
The tournament on Saturday was decided by just one second over three races lasting more than two and a half hours.
The winds were extremely difficult to the point where I wondered if it was time the Sailing club should be relocated.
The tall tower blocks on the island are playing havoc with the winds and in every race there were multiple capsizes. The start line is so affected these days we see yachts going over before they even start racing.
I believe every boat capsized several times as the winds would build up to 16 knots (29kph) the gusts would kick in and the wind accelerated to 23 knots (43kph) in a split second. This is normal and can be handled easily by most good sailors. The greater problem was the volume of tall apartment blocks on the island shore. In 2008 there were two buildings diverting wind, today there is 14 tower blocks causing major disruption to the North East winds. The issue is created as the wind whips around the building and changes direction in a split second. If you are leaning out to counter balance your boat against the wind and the wind stops like a light bulb being switched off; the boats simply falls on top of you.
All in all it was the best to the front as it should be

Some excellent Laser Racing yesterday, Elliot the Commodore from Kampala Yacht Club joined us for the evening.
The racing was close and in challenging conditions. Elliot and Dickens got the jump on Mohamed at the start, when they came back from Likoni the roles were reversed and Mohamed was leading. Elliot did lead for a while but not knowing the course whilst leading is a little difficult and he lost ground going the wrong way and having to go back to round Liwatoni mark. All boats crossing the finish line in with less than 30 seconds between them is impressive.
