A SNEAK PREVIEW INTO MEDIAPRO, THE COMPANY SET TO PRODUCE THE 2018 KPL GAMES

A solid ten years on air, made it clear that Kenyan football had tasted the value of Live television, and it would not take long before another suitor came knocking at its door - However, after months of dry news on the above, crestfallen were the Sportpesa, Kenya Premier League fans, as well as a great number of East African youth, especially those whose main source of livelihood was dependent on the league’s Live broadcasts by Supersport Pty.

Since the abrupt exit by the South African Pay TV giants, the route to get the league back on our screens roaring, of course in its emblematic image of high quality pictures and sound, has been kept a highly guarded secret to its fans - All perhaps in a bid to have every aspect of its production, and rights distribution settled in the most professional way ever done.

Earlier this month, the KPL released half of the 2018 season fixtures, a move that left many guessing, specifically because it earmarked a number of games for TV, without revealing the producers and, or, the official broadcaster.

Through their collaboration with the Spanish League organisers, a partnership whose one of the main pillars has been transfer of skills, the Kenyan Premier League Limited has sealed a lucrative deal with MEDIAPRO, the producers of the Spanish Laliga, a world class product currently packaged in Ultra-High Definition, simply denoted as ‘4K’.

With the producers known, the main question lingering now must be who the broadcasters are.

According to my impeccable sources from within the local media circles, KTN, K24, NTV and KWESÉ Free Sports have already put in a bid for the free-to-air category of rights, while Chinese owned StarTimes, whose marketing division is currently headed by the former Supersport, East Africa, Marketing Manager, Japheth Akhulia, are in the race to out muscle the Zimbabwe media mogul, Strive Masiyiwa’s, KWESÉ Sports for the Pay TV rights.

Supersport are said to have also picked the bid document, but are yet to declare their commitment by returning it.

In another twist, the former KPL broadcaster had initially shown interest in wanting to produce the games on behalf of the Kenyan league organisers, something they would have easily done with all their facilities in Nairobi still intact, save for their highly trained staff, whom they had to let go owing to the redundancy of their positions.

That proposal came in too late though; already two Outside Broadcast vans fitted with high-end production equipment are said to be at the port awaiting clearance; the ten-camera-spec, which is the minimum MEDIAPRO has employed before in the initial stages of productions such as the Kenyan league include: High-speed Ultra Super-slomo cameras, Jimi Jibs, Goalcams, and Steadicams.

All the above technology is meant to enhance the quality of the 314 Sportpesa, Kenya Premier League games to be packaged for its soon to be revealed takers, immediately the bidding process is concluded.

MEDIAPRO are also the current producers of the Greece National Super League, and the Portuguese Primeira Liga. The Barcelona based company, is not new to the African continent though, as they have produced other major sporting activities on the African soil before.

They have shown their broadcast expertise through the Afrobasket Cameroon, the World Club Championships (Morocco, 2014), the historic 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the 2009 U20 World Cup in Egypt, the 2011 CHAN in Sudan, the AFCON 2006 in Egypt, the Angola 2010 tournamnet, and the famous 2015 games co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The presence of MEDIAPRO in Kenya will for sure open up opportunities for our various sporting disciplines as well as young talent in East and Central Africa.

Hasn’t Christmas come early?
