DON'T UNDERESTIMATE WATER IN PIG FARMING. πŸ’§

When farmers talk about pig production, the conversation usually goes straight to:

Feed. Breed. Housing. Medicine.

But there's something just as basic that can easily be overlooked:

WATER.

Your pigs need access to clean, adequate water every day.

And it isn't enough to say:

β€œThere is water on the farm.”

Ask yourself:

πŸ’§ Is it clean?
πŸ’§ Is it available throughout the day?
πŸ’§ Are the drinkers working properly?
πŸ’§ Are they positioned where the pigs can access them easily?
πŸ’§ Are you checking that water is actually flowing?

A problem with water can quickly affect feeding, growth and the general condition of your animals.

That's why good livestock management is often about getting the simple things right, consistently.

Before looking for complicated solutions, walk through your farm and check the basics.

Good farming starts with good management of the things your animals depend on every single day.

At Pema Farms, we're committed to sharing practical lessons that farmers can actually use on their farms.

Practical Farming. Proven Experience.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ When was the last time you checked every water point on your farm?

YOUR PIGS ARE EATING. BUT ARE THEY GROWING PROFITABLY?

A farmer can look at a pig and say:

β€œIt is eating well.”

But that's not enough.

The real question is:

Is the feed being converted into growth efficiently?

Two farmers can feed their pigs similar amounts, yet get very different results.

Why?

Because performance can be affected by things like:

🌽 Feed quality
🐷 Genetics
πŸ’§ Water availability
🏠 Housing conditions
🩺 Health
🌑️ Stress and environment
πŸ“’ Feeding and management practices

This is why simply increasing the amount of feed isn't always the answer when pigs aren't growing as expected.

Before spending more money, find out what is actually limiting performance.

Good pig farming isn't just about putting more feed in front of the animal.

It's about understanding the whole system.

At Pema Farms, that's what we want to help farmers doβ€”look beyond the obvious and understand what's really happening on the farm.

Practical Farming. Proven Experience.

DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOUR PIGS ARE READY TO SELL TO LOOK FOR A MARKET.

This is a mistake we see in farming.

A farmer buys piglets.

Feeds them.

Takes care of them.

Watches them grow.

Then one day...

β€œMy pigs are ready. Who is buying?” 😟

That's when the pressure starts.

You may end up accepting whatever price is offered because you need to sell.

But a good farmer should be thinking about the market from the beginning.

Before you buy your first pig, ask:

πŸ›’ Who will buy my pigs?
πŸ“ Where are they located?
βš–οΈ What specifications do they require?
πŸ’° What prices are currently realistic?
πŸ“… When will they need the animals?
🚚 How will I transport them?

Your market should influence how you plan your production.

Don't produce first and start looking for a buyer later.

Build the farm with the market in mind from day one.

At Pema Farms, we believe farming should be looked at as a complete business:

Animal β†’ Feeding β†’ Management β†’ Growth β†’ Market β†’ Money

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ If you are a pig farmer, how do you currently find your buyers?

NOT EVERY FEMALE PIG SHOULD BE USED FOR BREEDING.

One mistake farmers can make is assuming that once a gilt reaches breeding age, it is automatically ready to become part of the breeding herd.

It doesn't work that way.

Before breeding, you need to look at the animal carefully.

🐷 Growth and body condition
🦡🏾 Legs and feet
🧬 Genetics and family history
🍼 Mothering ability of the line
πŸ“ˆ Growth performance
❀️ General health
πŸ“’ Records and history

Breeding is not simply about getting piglets.

You're making a decision about the future of your herd.

A poor breeding decision today can affect the quality, growth and performance of animals you produce months and years later.

That's why successful pig farming requires you to think beyond:

β€œCan this pig reproduce?”

The better question is:

β€œIs this the right animal to reproduce in my herd?”

At Pema Farms, we're interested in helping farmers understand the thinking behind good farm decisionsβ€”not just giving you a list of things to do.

Practical Farming. Proven Experience.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ Farmers: What do you think is the MOST important thing to check before selecting a breeding female?

09/09/2026

IF YOU DON'T KEEP RECORDS, YOU'RE FARMING BY GUESSWORK.

You know how many pigs you have.

You know what you bought them for.

But can you answer these questions?

πŸ“’ How much have you spent on feed this month?
πŸ’° How much has each pig cost you so far?
βš–οΈ How quickly are your pigs gaining weight?
πŸ’‰ How much are you spending on health?
🐷 Which animals are performing well?
πŸ“ˆ Are you actually making a profit?

If you can't answer these questions, you may have a farm, but you don't yet have enough information to properly manage the business.

Records don't have to be complicated.

Start with the basics:

Animals β†’ Feed β†’ Health β†’ Expenses β†’ Growth β†’ Sales

When you record consistently, your farm starts telling you what is working and what isn't.

And sometimes the numbers reveal things that your eyes cannot see.

At Pema Farms, we believe that good farming decisions should be based on what is actually happening on your farmβ€”not assumptions.

Don't just keep pigs.
Keep records of the business.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ Do you currently keep records on your farm? YES or NO?

FEED IS NOT JUST AN EXPENSE. IT IS AN INVESTMENT.

One of the biggest costs in pig farming is feed.

And because feed is expensive, farmers naturally want to reduce the cost.

But there is a difference between reducing feed costs and reducing the amount of money you spend on poor feeding decisions.

A cheap feed that doesn't support good growth may end up costing you more.

A farmer should be asking:

🌽 What nutrients do my pigs need?
🐷 What stage of growth are they in?
βš–οΈ How much should they be eating?
πŸ“ˆ Are they converting feed efficiently?
πŸ’° How much am I spending to produce a kilogram of growth?

Because at the end of the day, the question isn't:

β€œHow cheaply can I feed my pigs?”

The better question is:

β€œHow efficiently can I turn feed into a pig that reaches the market profitably?”

That's where proper feeding, records and good farm management come together.

At Pema Farms, we're going to keep breaking down these issues in simple, practical waysβ€”because farming is not just about keeping animals.

It's about building a sustainable business around them.

Practical Farming. Proven Experience.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ What is currently your biggest challenge with pig feeding: FEED COST, FEED QUALITY, or KNOWING WHAT TO FEED?

BE CAREFUL WHEN BUYING CHEAP PIGLETS.

One of the first things a new farmer looks for is:

β€œWhere can I get cheap piglets?”

But the cheapest piglet is not always the best deal.

Before you buy, look beyond the price.

Ask yourself:

🐷 What breed is it?
πŸ“ˆ How has it been growing?
πŸ’‰ What is its health history?
πŸ‘€ Does it look healthy and active?
πŸ– What is the condition of the parents?
πŸ“’ Can the seller give you useful records or information?

Remember:

You are not simply buying a pig. You are buying future production.

Saving KSh 1,000 when buying an animal doesn't mean you've saved money if that animal later costs you more through poor growth, health problems or poor performance.

That's why at Pema Farms, we believe farmers should learn how to evaluate an animal before putting their money down.

And this is especially important if you're buying your first pigs.

Don't let the price make the decision for you.
Learn to assess the animal.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ If you were buying a piglet today, what would you check FIRST?

DON'T COPY ANOTHER FARMER'S FARM.

One farmer has 20 pigs.

Another has 5.

You visit the first farm and think:

β€œThis is what I need to do. Let me also start with 20 pigs.”

That can be a costly mistake.

Every farm is different.

Your available capital is different.
Your land is different.
Your feed sources are different.
Your labour situation is different.
Your market is different.
And most importantly, your experience is different.

What works very well for one farmer may not work the same way for you.

Before deciding how many pigs to keep, ask yourself:

What can I manage well and profitably with the resources I have today?

It's better to start with a manageable number, learn the system, keep proper records and grow deliberately than to start too big and struggle to sustain the farm.

Don't farm according to someone else's farm.
Build according to your own reality.

At Pema Farms, we'll keep sharing the practical side of farmingβ€”the things that matter before you buy the animals, while you're keeping them, and when you're ready for the market.

Practical Farming. Proven Experience.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ If you were starting pig farming today, would you start small and growβ€”or start big from the beginning? Why?

YOUR PIGS CAN BE GROWING AND YOU CAN STILL BE LOSING MONEY.

One of the biggest mistakes in pig farming is assuming:

β€œThe pigs are growing, so the farm must be making money.”

Not necessarily.

A pig can grow well while your business is quietly losing money.

Why?

🌽 You may be spending too much on feed.
πŸ’Š Medication and health costs may be eating into your margins.
🏠 Housing and other costs may have been ignored.
πŸ“’ You may not be keeping proper records.
πŸ›’ You may have no clear market or selling strategy.
πŸ’° And sometimes, the price you expect to sell at simply doesn't leave enough margin.

That's why pig farming is not just about keeping pigs.

You have to understand the business behind the pig.

Before putting more animals into your farm, ask yourself:

β€œHow much does it cost me to take ONE pig from purchase to market?”

Once you know that number, you can start making better decisions.

That's the kind of practical farming knowledge we're going to keep sharing here at Pema Farms.

Practical Farming. Proven Experience.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ Be honest: Do you currently know exactly how much it costs you to raise one pig to market weight?

04/09/2026

DON'T START YOUR PIG FARMING BUSINESS WITH THE PIGS.

Sounds strange?

Here's what I mean.

When many people decide to start pig farming, the first thing they ask is:

"Where can I buy good piglets?"

But before you buy the animals, you should have answers to these questions:

🏠 Where will they be housed?
🌽 How will you feed them?
πŸ’§ Do you have reliable water?
πŸ’‰ How will you manage their health?
πŸ“’ Will you keep proper records?
πŸ›’ Who will buy them when you're ready to sell?
πŸ’° Have you calculated the cost of getting them to market?

Only after answering these questions should you start looking for the animals.

The pig should be part of the planβ€”not the plan itself.

One of the things we want to help farmers understand at Pema Farms is that successful livestock farming requires you to look at the whole system, from sourcing the animal all the way to the market.

And that's exactly the kind of practical farming knowledge we'll continue sharing here.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ FARMERS, LET'S TALK:
