Among the unsung heroes on the Emerging Stars bench is analyst Josh Angatia.
By now, you probably know him as the man who works at AFC Leopards and regularly writes insightful tactical pieces. But there is much more to Josh than the formations, movements and tactical patterns he dissects so effortlessly.
Following his appointment to the Emerging Stars technical bench, I decided to do a small 'tactical analysis' of the man himself. I wanted to understand who Josh is beyond his ability to look at football from a third eye and make sense of the intricate details of the game.
The good man once played as a Central Attacking Midfielder (CAM) for Pirates FC, now Shamakhokho SC, as well as Kaimosi Friends Primary School. His playing career, however, was cut short after his eyesight let him down.
As a youngster, Josh looked up to former AFC Leopards players Edward Seda and Clifton Miheso. He got to meet the two at Kakamega School, where he grew up as his late father served as the schoolโs principal. His dad also taught at Musingu High School. Josh schooled at Nyangori Boys.
There is an interesting story about how Josh first crossed paths with some of the people who would later become his closest friends.
During one of Ingweโs training sessions in Kakamega, a young Josh sneaked into the session. He was promptly stopped by stewards Josphat Odanga and Josphat Mulama.
Today, the duo is among his closest friends at the den.
And that command of English you see in his tactical pieces? It is certainly not by accident.
Josh comes from a family of teachers. His parents taught English, while four of his six siblings are also English teachers.
Unfortunately, he believes Manchester is red.
