Today we look into the life of one legendary athlete Wilson Kipturgut Chumo. You might have heard of him, but did not witness his prowess in the tracks many years ago. He won Kenya’s first Olympic medal in the 1964 Olympic Games when he won bronze in the 800 metres.

That was his first. Born in 1938 in Kericho County, 83-year-old Wilson started his career at young age while attending school at Kaptebeswet Primary School and Sitotwet Intermediate School. His track record was so impressive that he was notice while competing at the East and Central African Championships.

He was part of the Kenyan 4 Ă— 440 yards relay team at the 1962 Commonwealth Games which finished fifth. He won two gold medals (in the 400 and 800 metres) at the inaugural All-Africa Games in 1965. He thereafter won the 880 yards bronze medal at the 1966 Commonwealth Games.

The County Government of Kericho through the Governor H.E Paul Chepkwony has since recognized his contributions and named the Kericho Green Stadium after him. In 2010 he won the Kenyan Sports Personality of the Year award.
