Silk, lattice, light.

In Suzhou’s gardens, a Hanfu doesn’t interrupt the scene. It completes it.

借景 · borrowed beauty

📍 Suzhou, Jiangsu

The Suzhou gardens (苏州园林) were never meant to be seen all at once. Each turn reveals a new scene: a moon gate framing bamboo, a pavilion half-hidden by pines, a rock shaped like a distant mountain. Even the neighbouring pagoda is borrowed (借景) as part of the view.

To walk here is to learn that stillness is not empty. It is composed.

Rendition of the beautiful Sung dynasty poem

Sheng Sheng Man (聲聲慢), Li Qingzhao

Searching, searching,
seeking, seeking,
the cold, the hush,
the bleak, the bruised, the aching.
This turn of weather, warm, then chill again,
is the hardest to be easy in.
Two cups, three cups of thin w**e,
what are they against
the wind that rises with the dusk?
Wild geese pass overhead,
and my heart breaks,
for they are old friends.

Gold chrysanthemums lie heaped upon the ground,
withered, spent.
Who is left to pick them now?
I keep to the window,
alone, and how am I to bear the dark?
Over the wutong trees a fine rain falls,
and on into dusk,
drop by drop by drop.
All of this:
how could one word, “sorrow”, ever hold it?

This is a beautiful piece of Chinese wordplay and traditional-style life wisdom.

* 静 contains 争 — stillness contains contention: when conflict arises, cultivate stillness.

* 稳 contains 急 — steadiness contains urgency: when anxious or pressed, hold yourself steady.

* 忙 contains 亡 — busyness contains loss/death: being endlessly busy can make us lose sight of what matters.

* 贪 is associated with 贫 — greed can lead toward poverty, especially in spirit.

“看淡名利得失要宽心” is essentially:

Take fame, gain and loss lightly, and keep your heart broad and at ease.

lyrics by Ma Er Meng

These lyrics by Ma Er Meng have a very quiet, contemplative, pastoral feeling.

When I reach the place where I feel most at ease,
I’ll pick a wildflower.
I’ll wait for the wind, and quietly wait for the flowers to bloom.

People, slow down a little.
The clouds linger overhead;
you, too, should slow your pace.

I gaze toward the wilderness, beyond a thousand mountains.
To seek my own unfettered ease;
The scenery along this journey—
after all, it must be taken in slowly.

The central idea is 慢下来 — “slow down.” It isn’t simply about moving physically slower; it suggests stepping away from haste, allowing nature and life to unfold in their own time.

The line “就等风来、静待花开” (“wait for the wind, quietly await the flowers blooming”) is especially poetic: it conveys patience, acceptance, and trust in the natural rhythm of things.

And “总归要慢慢来” at the end gives the whole passage its philosophy:
Whatever the journey, it is ultimately something to be lived slowly.

“以梦为马,引泣当歌;踏破红尘,山海迢阔……”

“Let dreams be my steed; let tears become my song.
I shall journey through the mortal world, across vast mountains and seas…”
- Ma Er Meng, Heilongjiang
