Awareness & Cycling Safety - Checklist

Awareness & Road Sense
- Look Ahead, Not Down → Train eyes to scan 10–15m ahead, not just the wheel in front. Spot potholes, barriers, and riders drifting.
- Ride Predictably → No sudden braking or swerving; signal with body language before moves.
- Group Awareness → Learn to “read” the peloton: shifts in speed, riders looking over shoulders, or twitchy movements often signal changes.
- Construction & Road Hazards → Just like in the first photo, practice slowing down smoothly, holding your line, and reaccelerating safely.

Bike Handling Skills
- Cornering Confidence → Practice leaning the bike (not your body), keeping outside pedal down, eyes through the corner.
- Braking Control → Short intervals of front/rear brake use; avoid grabbing both hard. Modulate under pressure.
- Emergency Maneuvers → Quick swerves, bunny hops over potholes, or controlled stops on wet ground.
- Riding One-Handed → Practice drinking/eating while keeping control. Essential in race conditions.

Story Time!

"Last year, we stood on the sidelines of the Grand Nairobi Bike Race, cheering. This year, we’re not just watching, we’re riding together as a family.

At first, the thought of cycling on Nairobi’s busy roads sounded scary. As parents, the last thing you want is to worry about safety when your little ones are on their bikes. But when we learnt that the GNBR routes are fully closed off to traffic, with safety marshals, medical teams, and volunteers guiding every stretch, it gave us the confidence we needed to say, ‘It’s time to ride.

My 9-year-old has been counting down the days (23 Days TO GO), cleaning his little bike every evening, and asking, ‘Mum, will other kids be riding too?"

The truth is, there’s nothing like the Family & Kids Category. The energy, the laughter, the proud smiles of parents jogging alongside their little champions. It’s safe, fun, and one of the most memorable bonding moments we’ve ever had as a family.
