Look who I found at the pond at Xina Stables today! 🦆🤎

A whole family of White-faced Whistling Ducks enjoying the water — and what a beautiful sight they were! 😍

These striking African waterbirds are named for two very distinctive features: their white faces and their high-pitched, three-note whistling call. And despite being called ducks, they have a rather unusual, upright, goose-like posture. A few fun facts about these beautiful birds:

🦆 They are very social. White-faced Whistling Ducks can gather in huge flocks — sometimes hundreds or even thousands at favoured wetlands.

🌙 They are particularly active around dusk and at night, when they forage for grasses, seeds, aquatic plants and small aquatic animals.

💞 Pairs have strong bonds and often preen each other — basically giving each other a little feather spa treatment! 😂

🎶 And yes, they really do whistle! Their distinctive call is usually a series of three high-pitched notes.

🌍 They are found in sub-Saharan Africa and South America, with populations on the two continents separated from each other.

FIVE years ago, we opened our doors for the very first time 🐎 From wobbly first trots to full-blown riding classes — that’s where Xina Stables began.

This beautiful yellow-billed kite has been hanging around my compound in Nairobi for the past few days. 🦅🥑

And guess what it’s been eating? AVOCADO! 😂

I’ve been watching it from a distance and it seems to have made itself quite comfortable here. I honestly love these little surprises that come with having a garden in Nairobi. ❤️🌿

Nature really does find its way to us.
