There is a sentiment written by Wendell Berry that we love and use in our teaching as it is so relevant to permaculture and our philosophy 🌱 He encourages us to all be generalized specialists rather than just specialists. The premise is, that as we have become more specialized, we rely on other specialists for anything outside of our own specialty. This has led to us looking for solutions centered around our own way of thinking and our own area of expertise and has ultimately led to some of the massive cultural and ecological challenges that we currently face. We believe that by becoming a more generalized specialist it allows for a more informed overview of problems and therefore allows us to create more holistic solutions. We love the saying that is in this video as it perfectly illustrates how its meaning can be manipulated and changed to suit current cultural trends! Many of you may not know Ali, but the idea that this video is featuring her would embarras the heck out of her. But it summarizes perfectly the array of talents that everyone on the core team possesses and she embodies that in many ways, spending time developing her skills in so many of the areas that we work in.
